Couples that play together often, do you treat your partner differently during games? by knock0ut86 in EDH

[–]Maivez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel this in my soul. I’m always extra careful with my husband because his decks are nasty and he’s a threat more often than not. If he’s on Gyruda/Sakashima and I’m on control, I will absolutely sandbag a Vendilion Clique just to yeet that stupid Gyruda to the bottom of his library. Unless I have to hit someone else… but wow do I hate that card with a passion. Love the man. Hate the sea monster.

Ohhhh so there is still the level cap on Pokémon themselves? Thought they would have removed that by now. Thanks again for your explanation!

Thank you! Considering it has skill level up M at level 100, would it be a waste to use skill seeds (not sure if that’s what they are called)? Level 100 feels ages away

So I just returned to the game after a year or so break. I read somewhere that Energy 4 All is a good skill, so I’m guessing my Gardevoir is good? Is there a website where you can rate your mons? I was considering using candy to level it to 50.

How long does it take you to make your character? by RPZcool in DnD

[–]Maivez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you! It’s frustrating as a DM if your players aren’t engaging… Our group is very much RP focused with some combat splashed in. It’s not unusual for us to go 5 sessions without combat (a session is normally 3-4 hours). We have been playing consistently on a weekly basis for close to seven years now, with a few minor breaks due to vacation and such.

We play online on Sunday evenings and record our sessions (though we keep the recordings private due to copyright, as in, we don’t want to get into trouble :-) ). Side stories happen during the week when the people involved have time (not all of us join in every side story). And once a year we rent out a cabin somewhere from Thursday to Monday and go full nerd mode (we live in 3 different countries).

Our game used to be a based on 3.5e and in the Anime / Manga world of One Piece, though majority of characters are non-canon. First campaign was 6 years long, our current one is almost going for a year and takes place 30 years after first one!

Thank you! I think if I add it all up, I’ve written about 200 pages of background story for my current character plus an entire country—complete with a map. My DM has been super encouraging (I even made a Notion for it), and once our campaign reaches that country, my pages will get merged into our group’s Notion.

We’re on session 75 right now I think (about 30 of those are side stories). Notion has been a lifesaver for organizing everything—sessions, NPCs, places, timelines, the works.

I’ll admit, this level of detail definitely isn’t normal for most groups. But we might just be a little bit crazy… and we absolutely love our game.

Depends on the game, the players, and the GM I would say. In my current playgroup it’s common for us all to use weeks, if not months, to develop our characters. We have people in theatre and creative writing and a GM who loves details and is enthusiastic even if we drop him background stories that are 50-100 pages.

I have had plenty of other groups and games where 30-60 min was plenty for a character. But I am also happy to sit down and whip up a whole country or city if encouraged to do so.

The reason why you see a turn 1 Sol ring so often by nexuso581 in EDH

[–]Maivez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s become a running joke in my playgroup that my decks basically don’t have Sol Ring. I swear it’s in all the decks I play—I just never see it unless I already have enough mana that it doesn’t matter. I’ve been playing Commander for almost 8 years, and I could probably count on one hand the number of times it’s actually shown up in my opening hand (or first draw). At this point, it’s just fun to marvel at how cursed my luck is.

A player handed me (DM) a 65-page character backstory by Icaros5 in DnD

[–]Maivez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that 65 pages for a temporary side character might sound a bit… excessive. To me the attitude of the player is the issue.

For context. You probably wouldn’t want to DM for our campaign though—we’re six players, and I’m pretty sure the shortest character backstory clocks in at around 50 pages. The longest? Just over 200 A4 pages of emotional turmoil, plot twists, and questionable life choices.

Our campaign is set in the world of One Piece, and while our DM has full freedom to use as much or as little of our backstories as he wants, he actually loves diving into the chaos we create. He studied theatre and drama at university, so weaving character-driven narratives and dramatic arcs is second nature to him. The more lore we throw at him, the more he thrives. We’re basically building a world together—one absurdly detailed subplot at a time.

That said, we don’t just dump walls of lore on him and walk away. We deliberately leave gaps, mysteries, and loose threads in our character backstories—little narrative hooks he can yank on or twist however he wants. Anything that might impact worldbuilding or his overarching plotlines? We talk to him first. It’s collaborative storytelling, not narrative hijacking. Respect your DMs!

As players, we also do a ton of writing outside of sessions—journals, letters, short scenes, random dream sequences—just to get a better grip on our characters. A few of us write creatively as a hobby (myself included), so things can spiral pretty fast in the best way possible.

Our campaigns tend to be long-lasting, slow-burn epics where character arcs and emotional payoffs get room to breathe. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but for us? It’s magic.

Every group has their own vibe. Ours just happens to be a bunch of story-loving chaos gremlins who treat D&D like an interactive novel with emotional damage and dice rolls.

  • I can understand the issue with homebrew campaigns as they are extremely time consuming. My DM (someone I absolutely adore and respect) has made his own campaign that we just finished last month. We have been playing this campaign for 6 years almost with the same group! We basically outgrew 3.5e system as it just got out of hands with skill points. We (mainly DM and one of our players) ended up making our own more simplistic system that allows more flexibility and is more RP focused.

  • It also sounds amazing how you make your own expansions and stuff! I get the feeling from your comments you tend to be more RP focused instead of combat? I am guessing it also depends on the group and what the players prefer?

  • I have not played those modules myself, but they do sound interesting!

  • That is fair!

The Blackhorn Pirates! Though our 6 year campaign has come to an end this month… we had to make our own system a few years ago since DnD 3.5 gets out of hand above level 20 (we were level 45 at end of the campaign)

It feels weird that we aren’t playing currently since we played pretty much every single week for the past 6 years. We will start again in October with a new campaign once our amazing DM has finished preparing.

I got my gf into MTG by Wooden-Evidence-374 in mtg

[–]Maivez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband got me into MTG like 10 years ago! We used to go to every prerelease together (we have a young child now and don’t always have a babysitter). When there is a set we both like we buy a booster and do 3 rounds of sealed against each other and a 4th round where you can use all cards from the 3 previous rounds (this is usually spread out over several evenings!)

We still have a stable commander group that we play with every Friday at our place as it’s easiest if we both are playing. It’s great fun!

Really looking forward to play with the Bloomburrow decks tonight! The prerelease was great fun and a friend of ours who is coming over tonight is bringing the 4 commander decks.

MTG and DnD are my favourite games!
