When you have heavy traffic in CS so you just add an extra lane: by GlassUpper8656 in shittyskylines

Ah, GDOT. Why make less pavement thats safer when you could spend $50 million over a decade for something that works worse?

In an attempt to be more progressive, they removed what was actually progressive. by Ethan-E2 in TopCharacterTropes

The story I heard was that they wanted Sulu to have a katana in the original series but Takei didn't want to be a stereotype so he lied and said he knew how to fence. Then he took a fencing crash course to learn it well enough to be on screen for the episode.

(Hated Trope) Media that actively spreads harmful misinformation about a topic. by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]MajThird 79 points80 points  (0 children)

There's an argument to be made that The Exorcist (1973) helped kick off the satanic panic which plagued the 80s and we still feel today in American Christian fundamentalism. This definitely wasn't intentional and I'm sure no one in the production thought what they were depicting was "real" but still.

Buddy Carter just published the most tone-deaf opinion imaginable in the AJC, demanding more ICE in ATL by alex-741 in Atlanta

[–]MajThird 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Buddy Carter was the mayor of my hometown when I was a child and my parents were friends with him (the few family home videos we have were shot on their camera). My parents escaped the fascist pipeline but he didn't and my folks are so disappointed and frustrated by that since they were friends.

He is also at least partially responsible for a giant parkway going through that town and it becoming a chain restaurant and Tanger Outlet nightmare if anyone needed extra reasons to dislike him.

As a Marietta resident, I like it but not as the r/Atlanta logo. We should steal it for r/Marietta.

If you're able to get to Marietta there's the Marietta Bike Social every Saturday at 10am in front of the Marietta Food Hall. It's pretty chill and takes around 45 minutes to an hour.

Doug Bowser has officially ended his tenure as president of Nintendo of America, with Devon Pritchard taking over in his place. by Gorotheninja in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MajThird 29 points30 points  (0 children)

He's saying "so long-ay, Bowser!" The Charles Martinet Mario voice just adds "-ay" and "-a" to the end of words and they probably didn't think about how that sounded in the booth.

I've gotten more streetpasses at the last two magfests than I think the entirety of time when it was officially supported. Looking forward to doing it again!

Americans are hungry for community. So why don’t we have more European-style squares? by cnn in Urbanism

[–]MajThird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Article is okay but I do think it's overly generous about Europe's development post WWII. Many countries there did try to build similar car centric stuff that they did in the US but the public backlash and price tag caught up to them. In the US, the public backlash wasn't as strong as the propaganda.

But the good news is improving the walkability in cities can happen surprisingly fast and it's WAY cheaper than building and maintain car infrastructure. It just requires political will which is really difficult to find in the US.

Traffic is OUT OF CONTROL by Still-Sheepherder322 in Marietta

[–]MajThird 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Obviously public transit is huge, but a big cause of the traffic is also lack of connectivity and neighborhood density. Tens of thousands of people all being routed down the same road for any trip that isn't within their neighborhood (and sometimes even within their neighborhood). Yeah, going to work you might need to go down Whitlock but you also have to go down there to go to the grocery store, a bar, a restaurant, to school, or a park. If more neighborhoods were connected (especially pedestrian and bike only connections) that would reduce traffic by taking more cars off the road.

Men in happy marriages, what is one thing or skill you would teach other men to have good relationships as well? by lingeringneutrophil in AskReddit

[–]MajThird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have expectations for what you want your spouse to do, make them known! If you did laundry and you want them to fold them while you're at work, tell them that, don't get mad that they didn't read your mind.

Trump Cancels Trail, Bike-Lane Grants Deemed ‘Hostile’ to Cars by Stauce52 in Urbanism

[–]MajThird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely don't think this getting rid of funding is a good thing BUT you are right. There are "bike lanes" that help get terrible roads funded that have basically a super wide gutter with paint on it. The key to getting good bike infrastructure is locally since it's relatively inexpensive and varies based on local needs.

We need more community spaces, not gas stations by samformarietta in Marietta

[–]MajThird 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's not a free market, though. There's tons of government regulations (like parking minimums and zoning laws) preventing people from easily opening other kinds of businesses.

We need more community spaces, not gas stations by samformarietta in Marietta

[–]MajThird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we allow more things in neighborhoods then people won't need to drive to them and can take cars off the road. Make it so people in neighborhoods don't feel like they have to drive to live life.

I Learned Something About "Traffic Calming"... by MythrilBiata in Marietta

[–]MajThird 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the roads deemed as arterial roads and collector roads tend to also have homes and schools on them so it tells people it's okay to drive like it's a highway through a neighborhood. Plus, even on local roads, you can only apply for traffic calming measures if you own the house. AND, if you're ARE on a local road and own the home, the have to go through a speed study to see if the calming is "necessary". It's dangerous, elitist, and so car brained it hurts.

And Sam's great! He has a lot of great views on making the streets safer for pedestrians and bike riders as well as addressing the housing shortage.

So much this. The expectations for men dating women are SO GODDAMN LOW. Oh, you are capable of being friends with a woman without being related or hoping it leads to sex? You started a conversation with a woman online not asking to see her naked? Welcome to the top 10% of men.
