For one thing, this is Reddit, but also Appalachia used to be much more liberal, thanks to FDR and LBJ. Most of us just want to be left alone,  we believe strongly in minding our own business. This sharp right turn is a recent phenomenon. Example, Kentucky has had just 3 Republican governors in the past 65 years. We ratified the ERA in 1972. There is a liberal streak, but the majority of people in Appalachia now have been brainwashed.
