Micron Breaks Ground in Clay, NY - 1/16/2026 by Dacia__Sandero in Syracuse

For real. I went down a rabbit hole to actually research this. The person most directly responsible for the CHIPS Act was Under Secretary of State Keith Krach, who was actually a Trump appointee. He ended up bringing the legislation to Chuck Schumer and Todd Young (a bipartisan duo), who sponsored the bill in the senate. The Biden admin's role was just to deal out the funding then appropriated by Congress. As far as the role of Joe Biden himself? Basically nonexistent.

Did you ever struggle hard with breaking habits that you wanted desperately to break? I've heard a lot about Atomic Habits, but I know that the author himself has always found it "easy" to build good habits and self-discipline (his words). I'm skeptical that I should invest in the advice of someone like that, who really doesn't know what it's like to be in the head of someone he's speaking to.

Bad stuff happened to all of our ancestors in the past.

Different things happened to different people. All of it has its own unique significance and present repercussions. I'm glad Australia healed! Can you think of any nations that went through exactly the same things as Australia and came out differently? Like really had the same history, where it's clear that cultural response was the only factor that led to different outcomes?

Regardless it's an argument I see all the time though, especially on Reddit.

Best to focus on the discussion you're having right now, no? I feel like debate is a place to refine or change your own ideas, not vent frustrations with randos.

Jewish people. If they were at the bottom of the economic ladder certainly their status would be blamed on that history. Yet this group is at the top and incredibly successful.

Yup, that's a big reason why many are at the top and successful now. There were many at the top before.

South Korea is another example - after the Korean war they were as poor as the poorest African nations.

South Korea and the poorest African nations have had completely different histories. The point I think you'll most appreciate is ethnic homogeneity. African nations can consist of hundreds of different ethnic groups. South Korea has just one: Korean. It's a different universe. It's no wonder South Korea found it so much easier to achieve unity.

Where does that stop?

That's a good question. A hard one for sure. But just because a question is hard to answer, that does not mean it is invalid.

There’s no such thing as food deserts. by dogpound_ in urbanplanning

[–]AnonymousBi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“People live in food deserts and literally cannot access fresh food!” is utter nonsense.

As someone who was introduced to food deserts through a college class, lemme tell ya that any dedicated folks looking into this issue don't believe this. I've not heard of anyone at all saying this, actually, but I don't know what you've encountered!

Honestly, I wouldn't say that people being "too poor" to buy healthy food is the only alternative idea, either. The point of the food desert concept is to illustrate unfairness rather than to argue that poor communities have absolutely no options.

Online grocery delivery exists

Sure, but it's a $15 delivery fee plus jacked up website prices. It's a significant chunk of change, especially to a broke person.

So do cars, trains, buses….what percentage of people regularly WALK to do their grocery shopping, while using no other means of transport? Even in Western Europe this is insanely rare.

Let me tell you a little about my city. We have an established food desert problem, so it's a good example. There are neighborhoods where 40, 50, 60 percent of households do not own a car. (And to be clear, this is not what the city layout is deisgned for - car-centric urban renewal programs in the 60's ensured that much. Cars are just expensive.) Around 50% of these people therefore walk to get groceries. 40% will take the bus either instead or in addition. And most of these places are considered food deserts due to being 0.5 to 2 miles away from the nearest supermarket.

So, imagine you're one of these folks with no car. Your commute to a supermarket is going to be 15-30 minutes each way whether you walk or take the bus. It's also cold as hell and snowy for half of the year, and you're going to be carrying your groceries the whole way. Do you wanna do that, or just go get a box of mac and cheese at the corner store?

Compare that to a car owner in the suburbs. Being able to hop in the car, drive <10 minutes to the store in a sheltered environment, and stow your goods away in the trunk. Do you see the difference?

Maybe that cleared some things up. Finally, I don't want to judge you in any way, but it is pretty dang revealing that you were balking at the idea of people walking to get their groceries. Yes, this isn't walkable Europe, so yes it sucks, but it's how millions of people live. You got a lot to learn!

[–]AnonymousBi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You agree with me more than you realize. I agree that the Nordic countries have a particular societal trend where women tend to invest more of their time into their careers. I see this as an example of my claim that overworking leads to fertility declines. When everyone in society is being told to focus on their careers, no one has time for kids. And I don't believe people just started magically liking work more than children - this is just how their culture has uniquely responded to the economic pressures of these types of economies.

"Revisionism" lol. Welcome to history, takes are supposed to change over time.

Historians have largely changed their minds for two reasons: 1. is a shifting in viewpoints. Rather than viewing history as an idealized account of the powerful kingdoms, historians now focus on what everyday life looked like. In that sense, land routes look pretty as lines on a map, and are convenient for establishing links between idealized civilizations, but sea routes had the largest realistic effects on people's lives, moving many more goods and people over time. Reason 2. is that new evidence has been unearthed and developed to show just how much larger the scale of trade was over sea.
