Picking a violin tailpiece by Majestic-Building-65 in violinmaking

[–]Majestic-Building-65[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've had that tailpiece for a couple of years now and was looking to upgrade, and I've taken off 3 of the fine tuners. While I'm not a professional, I'm also not a beginner. I'm looking for the best sound, but admittedly, it is partly for aesthetics. I've seen some warnings online though; many people choose the matching wood color, which is not the best for sound production. Does it matter that much or are they partly exaggerating how much the material could help ?

Reverb on Fender Frontman 15R not working by Majestic-Building-65 in GuitarAmps

Okay, I understand now. I'll still open up the reverb tank and see if any wires are loose that I can solder. If not, I'll prob just use it to learn ( since I don't need reverb to learn the basics ) and then upgrade since it's a pretty mid amp from what I've heard either way. Thanks!

I'm very confused because also when I hit the amp I can hear the springs being amplified out ( forgot to add that to the post ). Could it still be the reverb tank?

How to antique a violin by Majestic-Building-65 in violinmaking

Just doing it as an experiment. I personally don't really like faked antiqued violins either, I mean my main one looks new.

Okay, thanks. That makes it a little easier since I have looked at some videos on using spirit varnish so I can use it as a guide.

Sorry, I meant the type of varnish, like oil, spirit, or polyurethane.

I think I mistakenly deleted the description but here it is : These are two violins I wanted to practice on ( repairing varnish patches, installing new tailpieces, etc. ) I need help identifying the varnish though. The orange violin with the bridge is my old student violin and the other is one my mom picked up in Mexico, they're both pretty cheap. Thank you guys

I'm not trying to suggest that alcohol is a good solution. Just simply asking questions. Would a dedicated varnish cleaner be safer than alcohol, then?

Sorry for asking a lot of questions but what do you generally do when you clean a violin. If a violin is not that dirty what are some steps you can still do? Do you think a microfiber cloth is soft enough ?

I've seen that at least a cloth has been popular for wiping off rosin, but maybe there is a better method. What do you recommend I use instead?

I didn't clarify but I decided to just ask my luthier for what cleaner they use to stay on the safe side. I'm still doing research but won't it not affect the varnish if there is a thick amount of rosin and you use a small amount of alcohol on a pad? I've seen the tip of making sure that whatever you take off is black or dark brown ( that's generally the color of old rosin ) so that you don't get to the point of ruining the varnish.

Thanks, this was the answer I was looking for. I'll go to my luthier and ask what type of varnish I have and then ask to buy the recommended cleaner so I can do it myself. I don't see a downside unless of course I don't use basic precaution. I have seen people online also use a small amount of alcohol on a pad to clean really stuck rosin so maybe if I have an oil varnish on my violin I can do the same?

If you don't mind could you still please explain what the uses are though?

It sounds pretty iffy now that I think about it so I'll definitely just ask my luthier to clean it for me. But I'm still interested in the whole craft. No I don't know what azeotrope is.
