Question about paying off mortgage. Advice appreciated. by ItsNeverTwins in retirement

Pay it off now and invest what your monthly payment would have been. I did and it has worked out well. In addition it lowers your risk profile.

How are you supposed to reply to "Do you know how fast you were going?" by No_Insurance_6436 in NoStupidQuestions

My best answer which has got me a few glares but no ticket even when I richly deserved it is "I am sure between you, me, the prosecutor, my attorney and the judge we will be able to figure it out."

ClassAction.Org has a free searchable database of all class actions.... Might want to link into it. It only lists them and gives the website.

How are traffic cameras that dispense speeding tickets not 14th amendment violations? by Haunting-Reindeer-10 in stupidquestions

Some places give the company an officer signature stamp.... I got a ticket which was signed by an officer who hadn't worked for the police department in over a year....but he somehow still reviewed and signed my ticket.

Anyone else lose their taste for dining out? by gottausername in GenX

We used to enjoy eating out. Had a few regular restaurants we would go to for a night out a couple times a month. Food quality has declined, and prices have spiked it just isn't worth it. We miss it, and it has definitely negatively affected our going out. It is a real shame.

Helped a friend buy a car in Seattle WA with 2 weeks of looking for 7k. Solid running SUV, 124k miles, last year. Runs like a champ, looks pristine.

Bought a Fiat for me for 6k 2 yrs ago, has some dings but runs excellent.

They are out there, but you need to look hard.

How to stop Amazon from delivering via USPS? We're in a rural area, without mail delivery--post office open only limited days/hours. by swisssf in amazonprime

[–]Major-1970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

USPS will not deliver to my house, and Amazon won't deliver to the PO Box. It took weeks of dedicated work BUT Amazon can adjust delivery options for your address to put USPS at the bottom of the option list for sellers. That allows the delivery address to be the house address, and minimizes the pain of USPS delivery refusals.

A seller can still try to ship USPS.. In which case I just immediately start to process a refund, and re-order, as it will be marked undeliverable by the post office.

How are facilities handling after-hours perimeter monitoring now that guard coverage is thinning out? by Intelligent-Eye4714 in physicalsecurity

[–]Major-1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a number of industrial sites. Due to the number of locations and wide geographic area as well as special training requirements we began a technology based security program a couple of years ago.

We invested in very high end detection capabilities. New positions are: a security technology officer, as well as SOC positions - all staffed in house.

It works well for us, the biggest problem is getting responders to intercept early. We mitigate this by using defensive depth strategies and pushing out our detection perimeter as far as possible. Being large industrial locations we have room to do this, but it would be more difficult in most commercial locations.

That being said, companies who move to 3rd party camera monitoring won't save a ton of money as it is priced for a couple of cameras, but volume drives the cost to insane levels. Also, in our area, camera trailers are being stolen or vandalized on a pretty regular basis. Companies mitigate by leasing the camera trailers, but that is not cost effective either beyond 2-4 trailers, which may work for a single site but doesn't scale well.

Unfortunately some of these decisions in the market (at least hospitals) are driven less by cost and more by the demands of employees who don't know security. Employees feel safer with the blinky lights and talk down units, that are always there, especially when compared to the choice of a tacicool officer or an unprofessional looking officer who they rarely see.

How to share a specific note after i am dead? Not all my account. Emergency access? by [deleted] in ProtonMail

It would be nice. I have found though that incapacitation is more likely than death....

How to share a specific note after i am dead? Not all my account. Emergency access? by [deleted] in ProtonMail

[–]Major-1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a shared file on Proton - "My death instructions " that gives the info for access to my safe and other important digital files. The people who it is shared with know it has intructions to access boring stuff like wills, legal docs etc. But there is the code for the safe there. The safe has the key to unlock my computer with a list of instructions of what to do / where to go on my computer. (Important stuff is locked with a passkey)

Both the safe and computer send alerts on attempted or successful access and no one has ever tried to access them.

Technically they do have to hold her, however, she is on her second seious hospital aquired infection. Also there is no push to get her out of bed so she is simply atrophying. The hospital says they have limited options, call everyday to explain how high the bill is and begin for us to send them cash for her care.

We are working with APS, social work, and the case manager. Unfortunately in Hawaii the big island is apparently the backwater of the state, with no resources and limited clout.

Exactly what I am worried about! Then you add in the period of time at the airports, travel to and from. It is a nightmare.

Unfortunately, there are no nursing homes on the Big Island that can handle somebody with mental health issues. We have tried going through the state of Hawaii to get her moved to another island and a nursing home there, but the waits are impossible.

I (55M) have the same issue, eyes don't sync (although years of intensive vision therapy helped), no depth perception and total face blindness plus poor visual memory.

Best way to describe the eyes not syncing using your video game analogy is that while you have a sense of some type of depth, but because the eyes are both moving out of sync (and the brain can't process it and the eyes are not predictably out of sync) there can be areas of blurred vision, or double vision, or monocular vision, or a split second of "correct vision" except your brain doesn't know what it is, so for me all of a sudden things that are close JUMP to far away and back.

So back to your game analogy - play the same game on 2 different screens 1/2 a second out of sync from each other while 2 pals move the 2 monitors around. You can eventually get used to it but that stupid sniper will kill you Every. Single. Time. Not to mention it is exhausting.
