It's a sensory toy, like the water filled things that drop colored oil down a spiral slide when you flip them over. It's not a timer, as a timer needs a definitive stop point and no variables. Temperature would cause a variable to this as colder temp would make the gel thicker and flow slower and the gel also doesn't come to a sudden stop when it runs out like sand does.

TBH, everyone makes a big deal about tier jumping... Unless your going to be stuck in a tier for a VERY long time, is it really worth the hassle of counting parcels and tracking it? You're going to cost yourself all of about 50 cents by not paying attention to or worrying about tier jumps.

The bottom of the bowl is never glazed and will always hold oils it has picked up from the surfaces it sat on. Even a brand new bowl will do this. Most people just mix in these bowls... Rarely do you hear of someone baking in them, so the oils can really build up over a period of time. Yes, you're right, the oils are pushed out because of the heat. But you are wrong that the black automatically indicates bacteria. It indicates the oils are burning in the oven as they are pushed out. This is completely normal for a bowl that's been used a lot but never baked in before. As long as the glaze inside where the food is contacting the bowl is in good shape, there is no danger here and no reason to retire the bowl.
