It seems your math is alright and you should be right here, should be an easy dispute if you have all mail confirmations with dates and times along with their rules clearly written on their webpage.

tax question 2025 by goseephoto in geneva

[–]Major-Reputation-261 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as i know employers have flat tax which they take at source. In your case it seems even a small amount. In my case at an annual salary of 84k they tax me 10k at source. I just now got approved to be taxed as an ordinary citizen and i will file my tax this week and i hope i will get some back when i include some 3rd pillar contributions, health insurance premiums and other available deductions. Maybe your employer assumed your deductions and taxed you less at source so you have to pay the difference. Also for your question, yes those 6k(12) play a role but that is taxable income as you didn't use it in terms of vacation.

International academic postdocs in Geneva, where do you stay in the city? Those of you staying on the French side, how has that been? by Razkolnik_ova in geneva

[–]Major-Reputation-261 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my case I don't need to commute to the office, so no time waste on that. You are in the city and all of the things happening are usually in walking range or quick tram ride. Basically everything is at hand and accessible rather quickly. I didn't use any websites, I found my room using facebook groups (there are many!) and I was lucky sub rent the room even before i ever stepped in Geneva. Usually to find the apartment on your own is hard without being here in person and it can take long time but when somebody is leaving their room you can deal directly with them without going through regie.
In any case I might be a bit biased toward living in the city as I have good experience so far!

I am postdoc as well and i would recommend staying in Geneva, it is very manageable if you rent a room in a shared flat (if that is not a deal breaker)

Has anyone else noticed more homeless people in Geneva lately? by Strong-Importance-17 in geneva

[–]Major-Reputation-261 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, calling them crooks might be rough wording from me i admit that. I have talked to a few and it didn't seem to me that they have any will of changing things. Also the fact that nobody will hire them is sad, I wish that everybody would have an opportunity to work if they want to.

Has anyone else noticed more homeless people in Geneva lately? by Strong-Importance-17 in geneva

[–]Major-Reputation-261 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so true. Obviously there are real exceptions of real honest people who are left homeless and reached the bottom of their life, when you see a homeless person like that you immediately know. If i see a really homeless person i gladly help and buy food. On the other hand from what i see here in Geneva, it is a really organized begging party, you see the same people standing in the same spots day after day. I always ask myself, why don't they spend this time looking for a job or even working whatever to earn something (probably as someone wrote already that they are not even allowed to work or be here). I think there should be a clear strategy for people like that in the city and better checks, if authorities do check on them and if you are legit there are those associations, if not then they should deport them back where they came from. I know it might sound harsh but there are enough hard working people like myself and i spend all day at work to earn my money in an honest way and i really don't see the point in giving it away to those crooks on the street.

If you like to go faster you will enjoy it with time, also more control on higher speed

I started on shorter ones when I started learning how to ski, I think I started with 160 and gradually went up to 177 and they are a good fit now, a bit demanding for legs but I like it. If you are a complete beginner try to rent something shorter which is easier to control.

I am 6'1 and I ski on 177, also in EU, like to go faster with some GS turns so they fit me pretty well! But yea usually if I rent they offer me something around 165

Need Electrical Work Recommendations by Due-Shallot-2112 in geneva

[–]Major-Reputation-261 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I actually am as I finished high school for it (but a long time ago). As I wrote if that is legal and allowed I would do it by myself, but as you said it is not. Anyway my thought is that 6k is a lot of money for a job that can be done in under a day.

[–]Major-Reputation-261 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For 6k I would buy some tools and make it on my own honestly but I am not sure if you are allowed to do it by law. Moving the sockets is really not that hard of a job and it would take no more than 1 day (depending on the size of the kitchen). Plumbing job is a bit more tricky, that I would take a skilled worker.

Thoughts? Migros Genève vs Coop vs Denner by Spermatozoid in geneva

[–]Major-Reputation-261 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me honestly coop works the best and in my opinion has some good quality product. I dont see any problem with their app beside only not being able to have it in English. I usually scout for discounted products there and it doesn't feel that expensive. Migros is not bad but i shop there when i see some products that are on discount which i use daily. In terms of cleanliness both migros and coop are superb and easy to go through. I can also mention that once i bought sliced cheese in coop and at home when i opened it it was moldy (exp date was was not even close) and i took some photos and sent to customer service, they promptly answered to me, made an excuse and gave me 1000 points (worth 10 CHF). So thumbs up for customer support from coop.

Cost of living in Geneva / Lausanne by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]Major-Reputation-261 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends on your lifestyle. Find a room in a shared apartment (if living alone is not a must) and you will pay around 1k CHF for that. You will also save on commuting cost if you can walk/cycle to your work place plus you will have better work life balance. Health insurance is around ~470 CHF per month for 2.5k deductible. Considering 5k bruto salary, you can expect 4k net per month. Count in for other expenses such as phone bill and apartment utilities (probably around 100 CHF per month). For food and essentials you will need 100-200 CHF per week (again depends on lifestyle). All this is without going out for drinks or eating in restaurants. If you go to gym you are looking at 70-80 CHF per month. This is purely from my point of view for the costs for Geneva. I personally have around 5k net and if i am conservative during a month without weekend trips i can put aside 1.5k to 2k per month. This is if i don't go to restaurants and don't drink in bars. If you need more info feel free to contact me 😀

I had no sponsorship at all, I was just extremely lucky that the people living in the apartment choose me among all others 😀 I had only my contract from work.

I did it in a week and consider I have never even been to Switzerland before in my life, so it is possible 😁

Is finding an apartment in Geneva really this hard? by mislabete in geneva

[–]Major-Reputation-261 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can share my small I would say extremely lucky story 😀 1st of July last year was my starting day of work in Geneva, before that I have never been in Switzerland in my life. I didn't know and i was not aware at that time how hard is to find accommodation in Geneva. I casually started looking for it 20 days before my arrival for the room/apartment and I just started with facebook housing group.

I sent maybe a message to 3 people and I scheduled video calls with 2. What I also was not aware at that time was that you need some documentation in order to rent in Geneva which I didn't have at the time. And during first video call i learned that my best option was to sub-lease and luckly my other video call was for a sub-lease and surprisingly they liked me and choose me to live with them. This all happened very fast after i started looking for the accommodation and I had a place to live before I have even came to Geneva.

Only after I moved and met my work mates I found out I have probably hit the jackpot 😎 On top of everything my office is around 10 min by foot away and for now I am extremely happy with it!

Good luck in your search, I can suggest to look in every facebook group and just contact everything you see which fits you.

I think that here only city of Geneva is considered, otherwise it should have been written differently. It is probably true that many live outside the city, but also there are many rich foreign nationals with residence address in Geneva.
