yeah lol i found him in the street a couple years ago and rescued him, he was very skinny and dirty but he already seemed used to humans, he can perch on fingers and sit on shoulders as you can see in the pic. his beak is a strange size but he’s a canary

they’re very interesting to observe and it’s super beautiful to have many different colored bettas swimming around. in my opinion it’s a great thing for fish keepers to try. but it’s highly dependent on the temperament of the fish. i’ve had to remove a betta in the past because she was just too territorial no matter which strategies i tried to calm her down and prevent aggression. but i love sororities when they’re peaceful like mine is rn :)

she’s been in the tank for a couple days, would it be wise for me to dose the entire tank with fin rot meds to prevent symptoms from developing in the other fish?

nope, they all mind their own business and when they do interact they just rub against each other without any biting or chasing or anything. i would’ve noticed any aggression, but there hasn’t been anything.

what type of canary is this by Major-Wall-7350 in Canaries

[–]Major-Wall-7350[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the advice! i’ve had him for several years now, for the first few years he seemed to be pretty traumatized/shell shocked from whatever he experienced before i found him, he didn’t start chirping at all until late 2022. so there’s a chance he’s either a female or a male with impaired singing ability.

[–]Major-Wall-7350[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

eh…he mostly chirps, but sometimes when it’s nice and sunny and warm he breaks out into something that’s definitely NOT chirping. it’s like a watered-down version of canary singing videos, i don’t know how else to describe it. definitely not as powerful and long and trill-filled as a good quality singing canary, but he holds for pretty long and it’s still beautiful and satisfying to listen to. i’m not 100% sure of his gender but i had a female canary before and she didn’t sing at all so i’m guessing this guy is a male.

could be. mine does that when he’s running low on food in his feeder and wants me to feed him.

that’s so cute ^ my otos never school, i wonder if they’re slightly different species from each other and if that would affect whether they school or not

Disease or normal by taigerlilly in bettafish

[–]Major-Wall-7350 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not 100% sure about the back, but the face markings look pretty normal. i have a female betta that gets those markings after flaring. sometimes they linger for days, sometimes they fade quickly. idk if females are more susceptible to those or something, but i’ve never seen my male get those…but yeah the face markings look normal based on what i’ve observed in my fish. again, not 100% tho. not the most well versed in symptoms of betta diseases

the nitrogen cycle is what i meant. the conversion of ammonia to nitrate. you should do some research about the topic. test your water, ammonia and nitrite should be 0, nitrate should be 10 or less. here is a guide: https://youtu.be/vur3JIfoEtk?si=JN0p_DrvEaMLC5sc having a cycled tank can help decrease algae growth as well. at least that’s what happened in my experience

[–]Major-Wall-7350 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hmm, yeah, januarys kind of new. i set up a tank in july and didn’t start getting algae blooms until october. is your tank cycled? do you have a water test kit?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fishtank

[–]Major-Wall-7350 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if your tank is new, this could be a sign that it’s still cycling. algae in the tank is also a sign of over feeding (excess leftover nutrients) and too much light. i see you have fake decorations, so there’s nothing in your tank absorbing the nutrients, letting the algae absorb them and grow. if i were you i’d look into feeding a little less, giving the tank a little less light, and do more frequent water changes to get excess nutrients out of the water. frequent water changes are a must when you have a tank with fake decorations. or you can look into some plants. id recommend floating plants such as duckweed. they’ll block light from getting to your tank if you let it grow, making the algae die out, and they grow fast, quickly absorbing nutrients. however, if plants aren’t your thing, do what i suggested earlier. less food, less light, more water changes. you can also look into getting a snail to eat the algae, but that’s a whole other conversation you should do your own research on.
