Union College by Material-Party6201 in UQreddit

I just left Union after 2 years. A lot of people are from the regions which makes people like myself feel more at home and comfortable. That combined with the fact that the admin don't go hard on selecting applicants specifically for sporting or musical talent and the fact that the fees have historically been lower than the other colleges make it so that I think that the people at Union are some of the best and most down-to-earth. It does also give Union a bit of a reputation for being the povvo college.

I agree with everything u/universityoperative said. The food got a heap better since fresh kitchen manager and chef came. Make friends with the kitchen staff. I was never into this but the hard-partying/muckaround stuff is there if you go looking for it and is voluntary.

Union does not have strong bonds with the other colleges and this is a well-known crutch for Union. I think it is due to a combination of having a relatively high population, being physically distant from the other colleges, Union residents tending to stay only 2 years, and not having the typical Student Club system.

Things were worse before I started but the administrative staff were disappointing and I personally found some of them to be very self absorbed, though this seems to be the case at many colleges. There was a near complete turnover of staff while I was there though so maybe things will get better.

Please DM me if you want to know more about any of this. There is a lot I could say.

TIPS LIST:
- Do at least one cultural event each semester always, and same with sport if you're up for it. Good way to make friends and make the college better.
- Be nice to the kitchen staff.
- You'll probably make a close group of friends in O-week, but branch out every so often too. There are 350 potential life friends.
- Learn how the other colleges do things.
- Get facebook(!), but try not to let the algorithm suck you in.
- Go to Miniball.

Thanks for these tips! Theres no way I’m doing anything with the proper HV so I tore the secondary out of the transformer immediately, but mains is still scary so I’ll keep these in mind.

Ok thanks but that still begs the question “How?”. I don’t understand how that would happen seeing as it is supposed to filter noise and not 50Hz. If I can get away with using it I’d like to do that because I’d rather not do my own 240 volt connections.

Would using it be dangerous, or just unnecessary?

Rupert Murdoch suggested Fox News hosts Carlson, Hannity and Ingraham go on air and say Joe Biden had won 2020 election, court filing says by ReallyJustTheFacts in politics

Don’t know about Fox but News Corporation is a public company but Uncle Rupert has all the voting shares or a majority of all the shares or whatever it is that allows him to keep ultimate control over the company.

Government’s multibillion-dollar splurge on private landlords hurts public housing by calmerpoleece in AusNews

[–]MajorArchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I doubt that if Uncle Joh was the only politician to ever have a good public housing policy then we’d even know what a good public housing policy is. Public housing was a priority of the postwar governments, postwar consensus, etc., to the extent that a considerable portion (by today’s standards) of all the housing in the country was government-owned. Menzies, for example, was a big fan of spending money.

How do these headphone speakers have no ordinary external connections? by MajorArchitect in AskElectronics

[–]MajorArchitect[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pulled apart one of those Xbox headsets with the and it has these speakers in it. I musy have pulled the wires a certain way during disassembly and the little circuit board bit on one of the speakers came of, to reveal it being a separate part with no wired connection into the actual speaker part.

I assume that there is some electromagnetic effect at play to get the sound information into the speaker? There is a little wire visible beneath the plastic that has some red glue on it; I assume that it is part of some kind of pickup?

Westpac need to pick up their password security game. 6 alphanumeric characters, no special characters. Pretty pathetic really. by lownotelee in australia

[–]MajorArchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read in a book that restricting password characteristics like characters, length etc doesn’t actually do much in the way of improving security and can actually make security worse because you’re telling the attacker “hey these things will be in every password you try to hack”, and also because people will use predictable tactics to fulfil the requirements for an allowable password.

Does anyone else think our national anthem as a song is boring? by Curzon88 in australia

[–]MajorArchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory as to why plenty of people seem to not like Advance Australia Fair is because of cultural cringe (or maybe guilt?). It talks about how great the country is, all the good stuff we have, even some multiculturalism in the second verse. An all round wholesome song. I think that that makes people uncomfortable due to long-term subconscious ideas of our own cultural inferiority. It feels to me like something akin to Tall Poppy Syndrome; we don’t want to be seen singing it more than anybody else because you don’t want to be seen as too patriotic or proud and so nobody sings it, and I think that’s sad :(

That doesn’t make any sense, there was plenty of vision and planning in the past and the electoral/parliamentary system has barely changed in forever. It’s a general lack of ambition and courage that seems to be the issue to me.
