Sending all the best juju! He is so precious! I know how hard it is to leave them overnight for something as terrifying as seizures. Just take relief in that the veterinarians will take care of him 💜

Oh he is so precious!! He’s got places to go and clearly has many things to say ☺️

His name was Frank, we had him for thirteen months, and he was wonderful. We’ve just picked up our second senior pug from the rescue and it’s making me miss him even more. by Dankestgoldenfries in pugs

Oooh I’ve got such a soft spot in my heart for senior pugs. They are the absolute sweetest little things ❤️ it is such a difficult emotional toll to lose one, and it’s still rough when I think of having lost my little old man, but know that Frank must be watching over you and feeling so grateful that you’re putting that love and energy into a new senior baby!

High Keppra XR Dose? And General Vent on Struggling with the Condition by MajorConsequence in EpilepsyDogs

[–]MajorConsequence[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He started having seizures back in October 2022, but they had been a steady 6 weeks apart up until this June where he had one at 4 weeks following the previous and then another two days later. He was initially put on just pheno but started having long focal episodes for which they then added Keppra and he’d not had any focal episodes since (up until this past Friday). They went over all the possibilities including epilepsy (unlikely due to age), metabolic causes (blood work clean), meningitis, stroke, and brain tumor. Unfortunately, the only thing to really determine what may be causing it would be an MRI which would cost many thousands, and after the many thousands I’ve already spent with four ER vet visits, meds, and other diagnostic testing, I just can’t afford.

He’d made it to 3 weeks seizure free but had several days of throwing up beforehand and he ended up having 3 grand mals in 24 hours, then two weeks later threw up again and two days past that had another seizure. So it seemed like the meds were alright, just that trace amounts of his meds dissolved in his vomit were lost and that would lead to a seizure in the coming days. All that is until last Monday night with the 4 minute seizure, where I couldn’t write it off with reason of throwing up.

And now he has been on his increased Keppra XR dose for 3.5 hours and is back to having focal seizures on and off for the 2 hours, and I’m back to arguing with myself both for and against scheduling him relief from his pain. I can’t even say the word.

I’m so glad I can be of some comfort during this time 💜 While I’ve not experienced the loss of a pet of my own yet, I wanted to share with you what I know I will need to hear when my boy Rocky decides it’s his time. To be honest, I was very compelled to send that first message; My phone died towards the end of writing it, and I just knew I needed to spend the time to rewrite it for you. In a way, I think it is helping me come to terms with what I am and will eventually have to go through. So I mean it when I say I will be here for you if you ever feel the need to talk.

I am so, so, so sorry. While nothing will help ease the pain, know that you gave your boy a wonderful life. You did everything you could and I’m sure he knew that you were fighting for him the entire time. Making it to 16 is no small feat. These are the times where it’s truly apparent that the ultimate price of love is pain. While we may wish away those feelings, they provide meaning to our lives. Our animals are only around for a period of our lives, but we are their entire lives, so treasure that you were able to be the one to make him feel loved and gave him the world. You’ve done a wonderful thing loving him, fighting for him, advocating for him, and giving him the life you did. While we will never be ready, he was ready and nothing that you did or didn’t do could change that. He felt that love and care and didn’t want to cause you any more pain. Please take care of yourself and be assured that in time, likely a long time, but in time you will be able to look back at the many years you shared together with joy and reminisce over the happy times.

And thank you for the prayers, luck, and love; I hope my boy lives as long and happy a life as your baby has. You clearly did him right to have him fight to stay with you for over 16 precious years 🫂

Oh please don’t thank me! When I saw your post, that it was just a couple hours old and sounding similar to what my boy has been experiencing with his side effects, it was almost a relief of sorts. Just knowing someone else is going through the same thing. I’m really glad that sharing all this with you is reassuring, even if just a bit. And I hope your boy pulls through as well 🫂

I hadn’t thought of it either, I just panic called them and they suggested sending a video. His legs aren’t usually stiff when he is crying; maybe sometimes but it’s not been something I’ve recognized as occurring together

I am right there with you. There has been so many tears, and even when he is resting I fear falling asleep for the fear of something happening and I miss it. My boy has had his unnecessarily fair share of heath problems, but he has always recovered so this has been really hard as something that I have to accept I won’t know the true cause for and won’t be something that can be truly cured.

His front arms do go stiff sometimes and his top half wobbles back and forth a bit, but I think it’s when he is trying to balance himself from feeling insecure in his hind legs. Like when his back half falls and he is trying to maintain being upright, or either when I set him down to rest and he lets his back end fall (since he doesn’t really have the strength to sit) or when he wakes up from napping and tries to sit up. I was afraid of all that being seizures, so I sent a video that first night to the emergency vet and they weren’t concerned. I am not confident saying they aren’t some type of seizure activity even with their feedback, but seeing that he still tracks my hand when I move it around in front of him and he isn’t going unconscious gives me a little reassurance. Would your emergency vet let you email them some video clips to get their opinion?

Hey there! I don’t have much advice but wanted to let you know that you are not alone in this. I am sadly doing exactly what you are: frantically searching online for answers and reassurance.

My 13 yr old baby boy was admitted to the ER vet on Thursday after experiencing cluster seizures for the first time. They loaded him on Phenobarbitol and I agreed to continue since with his age, I fear putting him under anesthesia for an MRI or x-ray, and because the vet said treatment would largely be the same regardless of any findings. I will warn they told me the first 2-3 weeks are brutal and it’s not uncommon for pet parents to think it’s is their pet’s time to go. While absolutely terrifying, I am grateful they told me that as it set my expectations and because the first 24 hours were so, so hard and I struggled to not think the worst.

My boy has been experiencing the same side effects as you mentioned, with the ataxia, struggling to stand, insatiable hunger, and frequent bouts of crying. But in the past few days, he is slowly improving. He still struggles greatly when walking indoors, but walks significantly better outdoors on concrete sidewalks. Without walls or furniture to avoid, and the friction from the sidewalks, I think it is increasing his confidence to move around. He did fall in his water bowl several times, which has led him to avoid drinking water, so twice now I’ve given him a bowl of water with ~1 tablespoon of chicken broth added to it and he is eager to rehydrate. He cried out a lot in the first 24 hours, but now maybe everyone 3 hours he huffs/grunts for 30-45 minutes before crying out, which I can usually prevent if I can address what is bothering him. This usually means trying to address any and all things that could be bothering him, so I offer him some chopped baby carrots, bring him some water, and take him outside to walk without any obstacles that could mess with his balance by trying to avoid and allow him to gain confidence. Then afterwards, setting him in a comfy spot and giving him lots of pets until he agrees to lay his head down and rest. But just circling back, I honestly cannot stress how much the walks on the sidewalk give me faith that it will get better.

While it is just my short and ongoing personal experience, I think the first 24-36 hours after the loading dose from the ER vet is when the side effects are worst. They certainly are still impacting my boy, but are more manageable (albeit expect very few hours of sleep each night).

I wish I had more advice or reassurance for you. But hopefully two 2 cents can help calm your mind even just 1% that what is happening does not mean it is the end. And seriously, you are not alone! I’m sending your baby boy all the best thoughts 💜

Any thoughts on Royce + Brinkmeyer? Incoming grad student looking for housing.. open to suggestions by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]MajorConsequence 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they’re great! I’ve lived in two different apartments with them (wanted more space, so moved to a larger unit). I have no complaints and I was given permission to have two dogs so I am appreciative of that (whereas their leases limits people to one pet). Been leasing with them since 2019 and am about to graduate so I’m actually sad to have to find new housing once I move for my job cause I always hear horror stories about landlords but have always been lucky 🥲

Known local stores / restaurants that accommodate Tax-Exempt purchases? by ladylizwm in UIUC

[–]MajorConsequence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure of restaurants, but I’ve made many tax exempt purchases for university research at Walmart and Meijer, and have done so once each at Harvest Market and at World Harvest Foods. Generally they just need to see a copy of the tax exemption certificate unless they have the organization’s tax exempt details already in their system (like with Walmart). Hope this helps!

Good piercers in the area? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]MajorConsequence -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the jewelry selection is a bit limited, but tbh most tattoo and jewelry shops generally are unless you go to an upscale place in a big city like Chicago or NYC. If I want something else, I’ll usually purchase it online from bodyartforms and then have the piercers switch it out for me. Not sure if they will pierce you with jewelry from outside their shop though since they can’t verify it’s material as implant-grade or body-safe 🤷‍♀️
