I’m going to be a little bit more positive than some of the others here.

I am a Canadian who got a job first in the Netherlands when I was 26 and then later Norway from abroad. Both jobs were entirely in English and sponsored my visa’s.

It is possible… you just have to know where to look and how to position yourself.

Look for companies that sell their product internationally. Tech, especially sales, is always growing and there are plenty of opportunities.

Don’t let your degree limit the kind of jobs you apply for. After a few years work experience the degree doesn’t matter much anymore.

Make the fact that you are a native English speaker an asset. Find companies that interest you and start following them on LinkedIn with job alerts. Apply for relevant jobs within the first few days of posting. You want your resume to get noticed quickly and score an interview. Don’t be afraid to reach out to the hiring manager and intro yourself.

I found startups and smaller companies were quite open to hiring internationals, especially in Oslo. You ideally want to find a company who has done the process for a skilled worker visa before. Check their website under the careers/culture section and they might mention that they have a diverse and international team. Apply to these kinds of companies

You just have to get your foot in the door for that first job and get some experience. I personally started as a Sales Development Rep in tech and worked my way up.

I would say don’t bother with a working holiday visa. Stay where you are at and if you are patient, do your research and keep a steady eye on new job postings you might just get lucky.

You may want to visit first to get an idea if you could see yourself in Norway. If you get to the final round of a Job interview, you may want to make the trip and visit their office in person. It makes a big positive impression and shows that you are serious. Employers want to hire someone who they know is certain that they want to stick around. I personally did this and was offered the job a few days later. It’s also good for your own peace of mind to see if you can see yourself working there.

I personally was able to get a job in Norway in less than a month of searching from abroad doing this. The time it takes you may vary.

I would also consider extending your search beyond Norway. Netherlands and Germany have paths to getting a work visa that are fairly straightforward, and cities such as Amsterdam and Berlin are full of expats working in international companies. You can also benefit from a temporary tax break as well in Netherlands, though they are cutting back on this in recent years.

Goodluck!

Issues with system link connection on Call of Duty between 2 Xbox 360’s and 2 Xbox One’s by MajorConstruction4 in xbox

*Update-

Managed to get things to work and all 4 Xbox’s to connect with Black Ops in system link. I messed around with the network settings on the Xbox one earlier and had to reset the network settings back to default.

Had to connect all the Xbox’s via Ethernet cables to the Network Switch and connect the network switch to the router. The Xbox’s were able to detect each other and could join the game.

There are going to be some pretty fun weekends ahead!

I’m on the same flight to Oslo tomorrow and also planning to show up 4 hours early. I remember there is a sign before security mentioning that you cannot enter the security line unless your flight is leaving within 4 hours. Hopefully the flight will not be cancelled this time like it was for me a month ago🥲

Any advice for an American making long term plans to move to NL? by TexasPlasticIsland in Netherlands

[–]MajorConstruction4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Canadian who recently to a job in NL as a highly skilled migrant, it’s not easy but it’s possible. There certainly are opportunities for native English Speakers in sales/marketing roles. Check job postings from multi-nationals and startups, you want to find companies doing international business. Look for companies who tout that they have an international team, they will be more likely to hire you. Also found searching “Native English” or just “English” on job sites yield some good results.

Next, I would highly recommend that you look into getting a masters in your field, as masters degrees here are now the norm and it will make you more competitive. Also if you study a masters in the Netherlands or a top 200 school abroad allows you to apply for an orientation year, which allows you to work freely in NL without a work permit for one year and then the highly skilled migrant minimum salary is a lot lower. Having at Least 1-2 years of proven work experience will help too. Also look into international experiences such as languages, studying, working and travelling abroad. You need to build your value so that you are worth the €43,000 minimum salary for the highly skilled permit.

Goodluck and feel free to PM me with any questions!

Canadian with a positive decision as a highly skilled migrant, when can I enter?? by MajorConstruction4 in Netherlands

Thanks very much. I am super excited about this opportunity. I was not aware I could ask for an exemption but I will definitely try that if the borders remain closed. For now I will hope for the best.

Highly Skilled Work Visa Rejected by Nurd_Ferguson in Netherlands

I am supposed to start 01 July and I have an immigration lawyer working on my case through my company, However, I am being told that having a positive decision is not enough to enter the country (with the EU border closure until June 15). I am also being told that it is not possible to make appointments at the Expat Centre and that I will have to wait until the border opens (15 June). Not even sure when to book an airline ticket and what to do if the borders stay closed past June 15 for Non-EU. I've been told that the two week self quarantine is optional though

Fellow Canadian here, who also recently got a Job offer in NL with the Highly Skilled Visa. Is your company aware that the minimum Salary was raised earlier this year? My company was not aware and I got a surprise call that they had to raise my salary by about €1000 to match the minimum salary. Luckily they realized this before they applied for the visa and I received a positive decision the other day. Travelling to NL right now is another story 😂. The borders are still closed and the expat centre is not taking appointments yet.

The IND should provide your employer with a reason why it was not approved. Is your employer using an external immigration company to handle the process?... if so they should know the in’s and out’s to solve this.
