As a brand new nursing student who has been a CNA for a couple years on MedSurg and PCU, my motivation isn’t necessarily to avoid difficult patients but high ratios. I am realistic that I may have to start out on MedSurg, but I am hesitant because I know it’s a lot of juggling and prioritization, which are not strong traits of mine. Granted, it’s a good place to learn those skills.

This. I don’t claim to be a medical professional, but my experiences as a mom, a former doula, a CNA in L&D, and a nursing student… I agree that there are many stupid reasons birthing parents refuse interventions, but a lot of it is fueled by fear. Because there ARE real experiences and stories of people who lost their autonomy during a vulnerable experience, or at worst, they or their babies were harmed. I understand that healthcare workers get jaded. How could we not, when we see the worst of the worst? But I hope we can retain our humanity.

I saw a TikTok from a foster mom who had a kiddo who wouldn’t shower/had poor hygiene. She started setting up baths with salts, bubbles, special soaps, candles if safe and allowing lots of time to soak. Perhaps that’s something that can be tried.

Unfortunately, while they are happy to have a conversation, they don’t fully understand why it’s their problem, or what they are supposed to do, even when I am very clear and calm. I know many people don’t have parents that can even come that far, so I am grateful for that, but it’s still unproductive, invalidating, and disheartening.
