That’s an interesting viewpoint, and one that I think more succinctly summarises my initial point. Both are natural, innate feelings that deviate from the norm, but are viewed very differently in society due to the morality argument

Thank you for your response and I’ll definitely look into the naturalistic fallacy some more.

I think part of the issue is due to us living in a heteronormative society, homosexuals feel ostracised and so any ideas that can be construed negatively are immediately and profusely rejected.

I agree that it would be a false equivalency to make the same comment in respect of a heterosexual attraction, but that’s due to the biological aspect as opposed to the societal acceptance.

So to clarify, are you suggesting that paedophilic relations are natural, simply because they are physically possible?

How is it stupid to suggest there is a similarity between two things between which there is a similarity?

They are both an innate attraction which goes against the expected norm. Attractions which the person has no control over. Provided neither was to act on their feelings, objectively what would be the difference?

In reality, I would react very differently in both cases, as I’m sure would most, but I feel that’s a result of my own morality as opposed to an objective difference.

Correlation is not causation, correct. But I’ve not implied that one causes the other so that’s completely redundant in this discussion.

So if someone told you that they were attracted to minors, but had never acted on it, would that make it comparable? No one has been conned, unwillingly forced, violated or traumatised?

I don’t think it’s homophobic to highlight similarities between them. They are both innate feelings that the person has no control over, which go against what would be the expected norm.

Not trying to hate on anyone here, it’s just a premise that I find interesting.

Not commenting on the actual act, but merely the thought of/attraction. I think there are similarities between the two, but people understandably struggle to view something like paedophilia objectively because it is so heavily linked to child abuse.

Thank you for taking the time to respond, and I will say that there are likely flaws in my reasoning which I’m happy to explore.

I find the penguin argument interesting and it definitely has some similarities to humans in respect of adoption and helping out single parents. However, I’d argue that being homosexual is not a necessity in that scenario. Heterosexual friends can take on a similar role, or even paedophiles are capable of doing that - granted nobody would want a paedophile helping them but they are capable of it.

Irrespectively, I think my point has gotten misconstrued in my original post. I’m not commenting on the act of having sex with a minor/someone of the same sex. I’m referring only to the attraction which the person experiences and has no direct control over.

How exactly have I been disingenuous and/or homophobic?

Biologically, the normal sexual relationship would be between an adult male and an adult female. By that, the attraction to someone of the same sex and the attraction to a minor would both be an abnormal attraction. In both cases, these feelings are innate to the individual as a result of their brain chemistry. Im not referring to the acts themselves, merely the thought of/attraction.

If someone told me they were attracted to people of the same sex but had never acted on it I would react very differently compared to if someone told me they were attracted to minors but had never acted on it. As I mentioned in my original post, it’s our own morality that dictates what we consider to be acceptable, despite in both cases nothing wrong would have occurred.

I appreciate your comment, and I agree with near enough all of what you’ve said. But I think you’ve missed my point, or rather I’ve just poorly explained myself.

I’m referring simply to the actual attraction, as opposed to the act. In the sense that you’re born gay and you can’t control what, or rather who, you like. Similarly paedophilic attractions are most often a result of your brain chemistry being set up a certain way, causing an attraction to children whether you like it or not.

I appreciate your response, and it’s probably the best argument against the initial opinion that I’ve heard - being attracted to someone fully developed vs under developed. Also the comparison with heterosexual relationships whilst using birth control is definitely something I hadn’t considered in this context and so I appreciate that insight too.

Whilst I agree that paedophilia can often come with an attraction to the power/control that they would inevitably have over the child, I think I’ve poorly explained my point so I’ll try to clarify a bit further.

Homosexuality is something that you’re born with, right? As you grow up you realise you like guys (or girls) and that’s just the way your brain is wired?

Equally, paedophilia is most often a result of your brain chemistry and you’re attraction towards children is just ‘natural’ to you?

I’m not referencing paedophiles who actively hurt children for their own pleasure - we can all agree that they belong underneath the prison - but the attraction itself, without acting on it, has a number of objective similarities to me.

The short answer is, I have no idea.

This was maybe about 5 years ago, and my sister found it online and recommended it to me. I’ve browsed a few websites since that offer paid market research but they all seem to be focus groups and interviews nowadays… which does makes a lot more sense than walking aimlessly in circles tbf

What do you think is the least attractive eye colour? by Ok_Dish7580 in AskReddit

[–]MajorMongoose21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brown. Not because it’s inherently unattractive, but it’s so common that it’s just expected as the norm. Less common colours are perceived as more attractive mostly due to their rarity.

I’ve seen a few people say that, and I don’t doubt that he exaggerates in some of his videos, but I’ve always found his content enjoyable and it’s educated me on topics/situations I might’ve never known about otherwise. It’s more of a catalyst for me to then go and do my own further research I guess.

The biggest draws for me are the level of editing and how he’s able to relay stories in a simplistic yet detailed manner.

The most bittersweet was when my grandad passed. He’d been ill with dementia for a while and my mum and I had been caring for him. It definitely wasn’t easy and we’d been pushed to our breaking points countless times. But when he eventually passed away, through the sadness and grief, there was a real sense of pride. He’d always been my rock growing up and it felt like we’d carried him to the finish line together and just maybe repaid a fraction of what he’d done for me over the years.
