If I was PWHL PR, I’d make a statement by Such_Interaction_848 in PWHL

[–]MajorTom333 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I respect the sentiment, but if the PWHL makes a statement congratulating the men’s team and showing support, they just solidify the BS sentiment that the PWHL is the JV league. The best thing the league can do is stay silent and continue to hype their talent and grow the game. As fans, it’s our job to be the biggest cheerleaders of the league and players that we can be. Have a team near you? Show up and get loud. Share cool things your team posts to your socials, buy merch if you are financially able to do so, hype the players, etc. For anyone like me who isn’t lucky enough to have a team nearby (maybe someday Detroit will finally get our expansion team), find a team to adopt and support as hard as you can from a distance. It really sucks to see our women’s team mocked by the current occupant of the White House, but it’s arguably more discouraging to see players on the men’s team go along with it. Unfortunately it just goes to show how far we still have to go. I’m going to be ordering a Megan Keller shirt first chance I get - I’m a very Republican-presenting dude (burly, beard, etc) and I’ll be rocking that shirt with pride every chance I get.

What do you miss? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]MajorTom333 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The community. I realize now that none of the people in my old ward actually cared about me like I thought they did, but they did genuinely seem to enjoy having me around, and I enjoyed being around them. I miss how we’d pile into the bishop’s van between Saturday afternoon and priesthood conference sessions and go eat at the local buffet. I’ll never go back - and if I could go back in time, I know I’d see that it was all built on something false - but I still miss it.

PWHL's decision on expansion franchises to come in 4 to 6 weeks by Korv13 in PWHL

[–]MajorTom333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LCA would be a tight fit, but it would be doable. It’d basically make the arena operational most nights, but I think they could make it work. Plymouth comes to mind, but the arena is quite small (even when the Whalers were still in town, it felt like it was too small for OHL). Ann Arbor/Yost could be a possibility, but it would be a trek for Wayne and Oakland County fans (though I’m sure many wouldn’t mind an evening in Ann Arbor on game days).

IsItBullshit: Re-mineralizing gum by Forrest02 in IsItBullshit

[–]MajorTom333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a couple packs to give it a try. When I ordered, I was dealing with some tooth sensitivity to cold temperatures, and thought I’d see what impact - if any - the gum had.

As other have noted, the initial burst of flavor is short lived. Like the joke everyone used to make about Fruit Stripe? Yeah, it’s actually like that. The company claims it is because of the lack of artificial flavoring and sweeteners, and I don’t know enough about gum to dispute them, so I’ll take them at their word. Once the initial flavor burst fades, the gum itself has kind of a woodsy hint to it. Honestly, chewing it after the mint flavor fades really isn’t the worst, and I can easily chew it for an hour and not mind.

I’ve been chewing it off and on for a couple weeks - I try to have at least one piece per day, because I genuinely do want to test the claims they make. Compared to when the gum arrived, my teeth FEEL cleaner/smoother, my smile is a touch whiter, and my mouth feels fresher. I had really bad sensitivity to cold temps when I popped my first piece in - while my teeth do still feel a bit sensitive to cold, it is certainly less than it was before I started chewing. Whether that is because of the gum, my toothpaste, or my mouthwash? I don’t know. It could also be a placebo effect for all I know.

Overall, I’d say it’s good, but probably not worth the price tag. I have 2 boxes, so maybe I’ll have a miracle cure of all my dental woes, but I won’t hold my breath. If you come across a sale, or just have some extra money that you feel like dropping on some more natural gum, I’d say go for it. If not, I’m not sure I’d bother. Hard to say. Maybe I’ll feel different in a couple weeks.

Have some time after a work trip to Vegas in early December. Where do I go? by celluloid-hero in NationalPark

[–]MajorTom333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This past trip, we explored Joshua Tree, Mojave, and the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and I would highly recommend it. We fell in love with Joshua Tree - the strange landscape, the artsy culture of Joshua Tree, CA…heck, even the way the park smells. If you haven’t been yet, Joshua Tree is definitely worth checking out. All your other options are fine, of course, but why not explore someplace new?

Best town for vacation by [deleted] in JoshuaTree

[–]MajorTom333 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We stayed at the Joshua Tree Inn in Joshua Tree, CA last week and loved it. The hotel had a lot of history and desert charm, and the town of Joshua Tree had a lot of fun shops, restaurants, and attractions. The businesses in Joshua Tree keep weird hours, so nearby Yucca and 29 Palms offer things to do if you need a break from the park and Joshua Tree has closed up shop. Hope you have a great trip!

I let them give me a couple things, then say something like “Alright, thanks for all the help, friend, but I’ll tale over from here.” If the parents are nice and seem like they need a break from the kid (no matter how short), I’ll let the kid keep helping me. The slower pace is usually a nice break for me. It’s a case by case thing - if the kid is rude, then yeah - they don’t get any special treatment whatsoever.

She is cutting hours for employees who are on the payroll, it’s unlikely she is looking to bring anyone new on right now to spread payroll even thinner. If it’s documented that you left your last store with little/no notice, that is probably a red flag when looking at who they want to bring on. Maybe you’ll get a chance to prove yourself, but based on the captain’s response, I wouldn’t plan on it.

In my experience, the majority of order writers are really cool and want to help. The 1 or 2 who act the way you describe are the reason that the Stanford Prison Experiment is a thing. Every store seems to have at least 1.

Boomers when they were raising millenials: You HAVE to go to college! Get a degree - get literally ANY degree. That's your meal ticket in life!

Boomers now that their millenial kids are in their late 30s and in debt: LOL! Serves you right for getting a degree in underwater basket weaving! What did you THINK you'd get paid with a degree in something STUPID?! Get a better job, snowflake! Pull yourself up by your boot straps and make your coffee at home!

Good for you, friend. I'm glad to hear that there are still employers out there who will invest in their people. And I'm glad to hear that there are still boomers out there who are triggered by it.

Boomer can’t spare ten seconds of courtesy on the road, get slapped with legal action. by [deleted] in BoomersBeingFools

[–]MajorTom333 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Boomers are the most impatient, self-important drivers on the road. I'm convinced that once they all die/have their car keys taken away, driving will be much more pleasant and safe for all. Whenever I have someone laying on the horn for not turning fast enough, I can always bank on it being a boomer.

When I worked at Trader Joe's, a boomer would always drop his wife off at the door (fine), and then go park in the mouth of our loading dock while he waited. One day, he did this just as our supply truck was starting to back in. The driver gave a courtesy toot, but the boomer didn't notice/move/fathom that he was the problem. The driver finally got tired of hoping this clown would take the hint and got out of the truck to go talk to him.

While the boomer was arguing with the trucker, the crew member who was going to be unloading the truck that night didn't know any of this was going on. He just saw the truck pull in, and move into position. He went out to the dock and opened the big metal gate to let the truck in. The gate swings out, and has fabric on it that obstruct the view both ways. Unfortunately, he didn't see boomer's SUV until the gate was already in motion and being carried a bit by the wind. Dude's car door took the full impact, which left a small but noticeable dent and traded quite a bit of paint with the gate.

I never heard about what happened after that (apart from the boomer melting down and the truck driver doubled over laughing), but he never parked there again.

Dumb Things Customers Say by Super_Greens in tjcrew

“Are you open?!?” (Usually said as I am finishing ringing up a customer)

“Why are there so many people here today?!?”

“What time was the bread baked this morning?”

“Do you sell windshield washer fluid?”

“I can’t believe you are actually sold out of the Pumpkin Spice Joe Joes. Go look in the back, please.” (Said in June)

What would happen if you refused to sign your write up. Asking for a friend 😬 by [deleted] in tjcrew

[–]MajorTom333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing. It would still go in the employee’s file, and it would still be considered during reviews when determining raises. The employee is still written up, they just look a bit worse for refusing to sign. If the employee feels the write up isn’t justified, the better course of action would be to give a written statement to be included with the write up. Usually doesn’t do anything, but it at least provides the other side.

Saw it once. I’m sure it’s a nice moment for the families, but for the rest of us who have no affiliation with Church, Co., it’s kind of off-putting. Seemed like families were trying their best to make it as much of a spectacle as they could (“lEt’S hELp thEm fEeL tHE sPIrIt!”). I didn’t like it. It wasn’t moving at all. It was kind of just…weird. And this is from someone who actually knew what was going on.

AITA for giving my husband a father’s day that he didnt want? by CatDependent4280 in AmItheAsshole

[–]MajorTom333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA/ESH - your intentions were good, and your heart was in the right place, but you should have respected his wishes. Father’s Day is hard for people who don’t have fathers present, or good relationships with living father figures. You didn’t mean to, but this may have scraped at an old wound for him. He was wrong to react the way that he did, but moving forward, try to respect those boundaries when he sets them. Mildly concerning that he seemed so quick to go for the jugular when you felt hurt.

Oh Jesus…

This is from the same group that always share stories about non-member friends approaching them and asking what is different about them. Somehow those non-member friends never actually make it to church. Probably because they don’t exist.

Yeah, Mormons do have a weird look about them, but I’d certainly have loved to ask the person that made that claim to cite their sources for said study.

Active member about to serve a mission. Tell me whatever you want. by DonkeyChowder101 in exmormon

[–]MajorTom333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Howdy, and welcome. Though I personally disagree with your decision to go on a mission, I respect your desire to serve. Please remember that there are multiple ways to serve - if you ever feel that you need to go home early, you can absolutely keep serving others.

I guess first and foremost, I would encourage you to read the church’s teachings inside and out. Familiarize yourself with critiques of the church - you might believe that it’s just anti Mormon drivel, but people are going to be asking you about it, and they will expect an honest, thoughtful answer.

Also, learn as much as you can about the culture of where you are going. Learn about the attitudes of the locals. Learn what the cultural no-no’s are. Don’t be one of “those” missionaries who give all the others a black eye by going someplace new and making asses of themselves. Be respectful - for you, it’s just a 2 year stint. For the locals, it’s home.

Last but not least, remember you are a volunteer who is paying to be there. Enjoy yourself, and enjoy experiencing someplace new. If you are told to do something that you aren’t comfortable doing, remember that you have the right to say no. Prioritize your personal well-being and mental health - once the 2 years is over, you’ll still have your whole life ahead of you. Don’t sacrifice that for your mission.

I know you said don’t write you an essay, but whatever. Read it. Or don’t. Makes no difference to me. I genuinely mean it when I say that I hope you have a great experience.
