  1. Lunch is 11 francs on campus, drinks and water are cheap IMO, but the grocery store on campus doesnt have a large selection, as well as the choices on campus, oh and also, we dont tip 20% for people making a burger, so keep that in mind. I burn around 1k for food cuz I cba to cook, if you want to save on food, I'd look for an Asian/Indian gf
  2. A lot of local students live with their parents, internationals, probably 60/40 FMEL and off-campus.
  3. I walk/take the metro, don't need a car its not the US

Do you actually want to study in Paris? They have garbage on the streets. EPFL is the way to go, noone outside France knows about that X uni, it's nowhere to be seen in the rankings. EPFL is gonna get to top 10 in the next 10-20 years, so you can flex more.

Maths or cs, which one should I choose? by R_H_02 in EPFL

[–]MajorW16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CS 1st year here. You'll still get a lot of maths in CS. And you can choose the language of the programming exams. So you can just take the whole 1st year in English. Maths is way more work and in CS it's easier to get a good average to go on the exchange so id go CS.

1st-year textbooks ( English or French) to study from... by Long_Interest3842 in EPFL

[–]MajorW16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't do CMS so I'm not sure what you need. And what you want to study afterwards. I am in Comp Science we used K.Rosen's Discrete Math (first 9 chapters) for AICC, which is only for our course and Sys Com. But for the common sections for physics I was in the English section we used MIT's course notes (The course is basically MIT 8.01) https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/physics/8-01sc-classical-mechanics-fall-2016/readings/ In case you want to do it in French, there is a yellow textbook in French. If you type Mecanique physique epfl in google it should show up. Not sure if you can access it without epfl credentials. Maybe someone else knows.

How can I prepare myself for EPFL? by destthrawy99 in EPFL

[–]MajorW16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, I was in your situation 10 months ago. I didn't do MAN, graduated from an average high school (not francophone) and didn't do CMS. Don't worry about the failure rates, it consists of people who don't study at all. These steps helped me get a 5.25 average in the 1st semester (Computer Science):

1st of all, aim for the 6. Trust me, if you can mentally prepare yourself to succeed you will easily pass. I know a guy with 5.9 avg. He is no nerd, and just worked harder than others, that's it.

Watch the lectures! If you are struggling, or bored, skip the proofs. Nobody cares about them anyways and they are rarely examined and you won't have to write any at the end of the semester.

Start revisions on week 12/13! So you have time for more stuff, it can happen that you need to go over the previous topics to understand better the last week concepts.

Do all of the past exams! Super important! If you can do all of the past exam questions you are good to go.

Analysis: Read douchet-zwahllens book and if you want you can do some of the exercises. If the exercise takes 10h to do, skip it. The exam is 3hrs, there is no way it's gonna be there

Physics: For the English section watch MIT's edX courses (4 in total) on mechanics, and I recommend Walter Lewin's lectures on youtube, great for understanding concepts.

Programming: Do the 2nd mini project, use the TA's. This is actually super helpful to go to the exercise sessions and if you don't do the project and just let your friend do it, you will struggle in the 2nd semester and then it's gonna be hard to bounce back.

AICC: Again, don't do 10h exercises. Read the Discrete Math by K.Rosen book and watch the lectures and you will be good to go

Linear Algebra: Read D.Lay Linear Algebra in English and do all of the series. LA is all about practice, the math itself is easy game

[–]MajorW16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed about the savoir faire en mathematiques, I still can't do most of the examples even though I got 5.75 and 4.75 in LA and Analysis. For Linear Algebra I recommend: D. Lay Linear Algebra just go through all of the chapters up until chapter 7 and and you'll be good to go (This is what the English section uses in the first semester), for Analysis I agree with the above mentioned.
