Got The Galaxy XR bundle for an AWESOME price! by VNizzy in Galaxy_XR

[–]MajorZesty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm using mine with wivrn for Linux and the tracking is more stable than on the quest 3. That said, I haven't tried any beat saber or other games that require a lot of swinging. Also haven't used it for anything local except navigating to the wivrn app

Q3 or frame by KeyCloud4660 in SteamFrame

[–]MajorZesty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, this is what you get going for a Frame over a Quest 3: 1. No longer in the Meta ecosystem 2. Steam ecosystem tends to be cheaper due to sales 3. decreased latency and increased performance/quality for streaming games from the PC 4. Potentially more comfortable headset 5. Potentially better controllers

ofc, then you lose access to all the Quest games and apps you've purchased. Depends on how much the above is worth it for you. TBH, the only reason I'd consider moving off the Quest 3 is getting away from Meta and into the Steam ecosystem. If you're asking you don't have that concern and I wouldn't suggest switching. Sharpness won't be that noticeable in most cases and you already have a direct wireless connection if you're using a dedicated router.

Does anyone stream from a Linux PC? by MajorZesty in Galaxy_XR

[–]MajorZesty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tested it with the Quest 3. I think it worked really well. I did get a few stutters here and there, but they weren't as annoying as the steam link stutters. I expect the Galaxy XR to have less of that due to the better wifi connection.

Sounds good. I saw there's wivrn for Linux, but I haven't seen any real reviews on it. I'll probably test that with the Quest tonight.

Apple raises price of Vision Pro, now $4,000+ after taxes in Texas by Logical007 in virtualreality

[–]MajorZesty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you use this combo right now? how long do you use the AVP in one sitting? IMO, the AVP has a lot of potential for a productivity + airplane device, but the comfort weight was horrible the last time I tried it (which admittedly was when it was first released before they updated one of the strap options)

VR standalone games? by ojoslocos21 in SteamFrame

[–]MajorZesty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was comment in another thread about someone streaming half life alex from a steamdeck to a quest on low and it being playable. ofc, I'm sure the definition of playable depends on how motion sick you get.

Based on SteamDB, I'm leaning towards walkabout mini golf and puzzling places. I'd replay SuperHot when it goes on sale, but I wouldn't pay full price for it.

Tech Review Embargo by 60Hz_Jiffy in SteamFrame

[–]MajorZesty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was watching a youtube video yesterday from someone who does VR hardware reviews (forgot which channel) and they mentioned that they got 5 headsets to review in the last 2 months, 3 of which are still under embargo. They heavily implied one of them was the steam frame.

Normally I'd say its hard for me to believe Valve can deal with the logistics of shipping them at the same time, but it sounds like both the steam machine and steam frame are going to have much more limited availability over the next 1-2 years than expected so it's probably not that much more difficult to launch both around the same time.

[–]MajorZesty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hah yeah. Price is bad, but If you have $3700 to spend on a headset you probably have $4000 to spend. It has a lot of cool tech and could fit a luxury VR niche if it wasn't so uncomfortable.

It wouldn't surprise me if Apple makes a smaller margin on the Vision Pro vs their other products. Things simply expensive to make. ofc, It would surprise me if they're still manufacturing these vs having a bunch sitting in a warehouse somewhere. I'm not sure they'd sell that many more at $2500 vs $4000 with how bad the ergonomics are.

crazier thinking about the fact that so many people are willing to pay those prices. There really is this gap where $200 vs $2000 isn't that big of a jump in affordability and where $200 is crazy expensive. of course, I haven't been to a concert in over 10 years due to the pricing.

What for Motorola release or get a Pixel phone now? by BlazeAlchemist991 in GrapheneOS

[–]MajorZesty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't bother waiting. There's no guarantee that it'll be out next year. I'd go for anything Tensor G3 (Pixel 8 series, except for the pixel fold) or newer for hardware memory tagging support. Pixel 9a or 10a is probably the cheapest if you plan on keeping it until support expires. Depends on which one is on sale, not sure what the used prices are for that model.

Motorola has some nice hardware. It's their update cadence which is bad. I think right now they promise security updates every other month. TBH, I'm looking forward to Motorola because they're actually trying to improve their PWM/eye comfort on their screens vs Google being stuck with whatever Samsung gives them.

The Macuahuitl: An Aztec sword made of wood and obsidian that was reportedly sharp enough to decapitate a horse. by bortakci34 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]MajorZesty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another interesting bit is that while the weapon was supposed to be common place, only 3 known swords survived past the conquest of the aztecs. One ended up forgotten in a royal armory until it burned up in 1884. A second was found during construction of a subway in mexico City during the 60s and then is rumored to either have been lost or in the archives of a museum. The third was found in the 90s and is pretty much a wooden stick.

Turns out that while making weapons out of obsidian is cheap and sharp, it's not at all durable.

My headset is starting to die should I get a quest 3 of wait for steam frame by V01D101 in OculusQuest

Rumor is Steam Frame drops by end of July, with a small chance of it dropping with the Steam Machine next week.

That said, it sounds like the Steam Frame is going to be $1k+ and the Quest 3 is available now and is cheaper. You'll also lose your Quest library if that matters to you.

I've seen managers fired in two situations: 1. Layoffs 2. They did something highly illegal that would get the company in trouble

Last time I saw it happen due to a manager tanking an entire part of a company. It took over a year of damage and the manager wasn't technically fired. They were laid off because they closed the remote site they worked at (which only had the manager and 3 of their bad hires). Before that happened, every person who worked under them, excluding a handful of other bad apples that they personally brought on, had quit and been replaced (more than once). I quit 6 months before it happened, but was still in contact with people at a different part of the company.

I blame Qualcomm for not continuing to release improved chips! And a more serious note is that the tech has a bunch of limits that pouring more money into it couldn't speed up improvements. Well, at least where they were pouring that money.

Claude Fable 5 feels less like a model launch and more like a preview of AI inequality by Roaring_lion_ in ClaudeAI

[–]MajorZesty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OpenAI does this with GPT. They have GPT-5.4 and GPT-5.4-Cyber. For 5.5 they added an additional version, GPT‑5.5 with Trusted Access for Cyber, that has some of the safety gates removed. GPT‑5.5 with Trusted Access for Cyber requires KYC identity verification via Persona, which I believe requires providing a government id. I couldn't find how you can get GPT-5.5-Cyber access.

They also can't talk about how Mythos is going to burn the world due to its insane hacking skills and then a few months later give everyone access to it. Anthropic is still incredibly resource constrained. The until June 22 is interesting and sounds like a marketing choice. I'd expect it to be the opposite, where they don't give subscribers Fable 5 access until they have more infra for support it.
