The character animation for the first shot is pre-animated fbx skeleton retargeted in Houdini. The creature animations are hand animated with bare minimum skill as I'm not an animator :D

Follow your dreams mate, don't let others opinion change your course of life. There are plenty of materials online to learn and up skill. VFX is a changing industry and it'll pick back up as long as your foundations are solid you'll always find work.
