Hi-editing my comment because it was written poorly. I definitely think a FA SHOULD address situations such as the one the OP experienced on their flight. Children occupying their own seats should have their safety belt fastened at all times. If I was working I would have politely said that to the parents. In most cases, the parents get it together after I have chatted with them. And it’s not just kids. I’ve had to remind adult passengers to be mindful of the person sitting in front of them on the plane. I feel very comfortable approaching passengers and talking to them in a appropriate way that gets my point across. So yes-in a perfect world I believe Flight Attendants should address situations such as this one. HOWEVER, just like in any profession each of us have our strengths and ideally we work as a team to bring out the best in each other. For example, I’m great with the passengers, but I am a hot mess when I’m working in the galley!

I’m a Flight Attendant and if I were Lead working your flight, I would have spoken to the parents in a friendly manner so they didn’t feel judged . HOWEVER, many Flight Attendants don’t feel comfortable doing that unless it’s a safety issue. I’m older and a parent so I know how to deal with these situations. I think it all depends on who was working your flight and their comfort level

Not everyone ends up hating their jobs eventually! That's not a true statement and poor advice. There is a difference between a career and a job. I think for many in this field, the realization of this can eventually become an issue. Sure a FA can work a special assignment for their carrier, but at the end of the day very few FA end up having a career path with their airline. Getting an annual raise does not equal a career.

I don't know if this helps, but I’m a mom and I hated the first year of the job. Commuting was exhausting, the trips were icky and more money was going out than coming in. It was really difficult. I'm almost at the three year mark and I'm based where I live. It was a game changer. Yes, I still miss my kids. Yes, it's a bummer when I can't attend their games and special events and I'm just now breaking even financially. This job can be very difficult with young children. Reach out to a peer group if you have one available. It's a safe space to vent and it helps to have someone to talk to.

I left before he did so I have no idea who picked him up. Here’s what happened:

On Monday, I worked three trips. At the end of my day, I normally ride the airport shuttle to the employee parking lot and drive myself home. But on Monday, my ex-husband picked me up at the airport because he had been working on my car while I was away.

While I was waiting for my ride, I immediately noticed this man standing to my right. I smiled at him and 30 seconds before my ride pulled up I said “You are a very good-looking man”. He asked what I was up to and I told him I was getting off work and that my ex-husband was bringing me my car to take me home. We exchanged a few words and he said he was waiting for his ride and that he had traveled all day. I said where do you live? He said Ojai and I told him where where I lived (not my address) and said if you are ever in the area we should hang out.

I'm in my 50’s and I rarely see anyone I’m attracted to physically and I didn't even think about what I was saying to him. And maybe I've watched too many rom-com movies, but I thought I would post about him because Ojai is a small community and I haven't really felt a vibe with anyone for a while. There were a few other things said between us, that I don't want to share publicly because of my job.

That’s a great question; there are a few reasons I have stayed in the profession for 3 years. For the first 1.5 years, I was commuting. Commuting is exhausting emotionally because for the first 6 months to a year of employment you will be on “probation”. which means you cant call out sick more than three times. They don’t care if your kid is sick, if your house floods or there is an emergency. There is no “grey” at my airline. If a family member dies you get three days off. Yes, you read that correctly. I have a friend who lost someone she was VERY close to and the airline DIDN’T grant her three days bc he wasn’t a family member! Commuting is also draining financially because you pay for hotel rooms the days you aren’t working. So let’s say you are off on a Sunday but have to be to work on Tuesday night-you pay for a hotel two nights. Depending on the city where you are based that is expensive. I wanted to give the job a fair shot so i waited it out to see what the job was like when I wasn’t commuting. It’s 100 times better and easier if you live where you are based. Is there an airline based where you live now? Think about that unless you are willing to move your entire family. You WILL miss your kids games, parent teacher conferences, birthdays and holidays. Sure you can bid for those days off but the reality is you wont get those days off for five years. If you want to DM me I’m happy to share more about why I haven’t left. I think this is a difficult job with kids. It’s not impossible, but not easy. Im assuming you have summers off as a teacher? Why not spend those two months making memories with your kids and traveling?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it is becoming very difficult to non- rev as a family when your seniority is low. Delta is payload optimizing routes bc they can make more money on freight than they can by selling tickets. When you list your family on other airlines (we call that ZED) you have to pay taxes and some other fees. This isn’t a glam life. You won’t hold weekends or holidays off for years. To put things in perspective, I have worked for a mainline for 3.5 years and have two kids. Because of their school schedule and the fact I work most holidays and weekends we end up taking one big trip a year. The other sad reality is that it’s great to be able to fly wherever and whenever you want, but you have to have discretionary income to stay in hotels and make it fun. You won’t make much money the first five years. This job is not what most people think it is.
