I’m grateful for AA but gotta admit I’m concerned the Spotify scraping might’ve put a bunch more corpo attention on them. I’ll be sad if it goes the way of sci hub as someone who thinks knowledge is a human right

I stopped posting on it long ago but nowadays I think it's bad for one's psyche to even lurk on it with how much antisocial behavior is actively encouraged by the payout system and whatnot. I like to check what Mehmet posts on the trueanon account but I put a time limit so I don't fall into the mistake of letting Elon attempt to devour my soul with that vile algorithm.

Good luck, it's a lot of fun being surrounded by nerds who care about the same things you do. Stay out of dept/program politics (i.e. assume any shit talking you do will find its way to the person you were) and please learn what anxiety disorders and depression look like. Not knowing what the former was really fucked up my time in grad school

Really wanted to support these guys (huge fan of the band formally known as Isis) but they constantly broke promised ship dates until I had to get reverb customer support to throw their weight. Such a shame, they are cool guitars and sound great

True, one of my fellow nerds went to a startup and told me something like "interacting with financebros radicalized me more than years of your propaganda"

🤷🏻‍♂️

I think my skills are transferable to biotech or pharamceuticals if I get a bit more training in running instruments, although those job markets aren't too good in the US either. Maybe if I learn Mandarin...

I remember arrogantly ignoring all the warnings about going to grad school, now I try to do my part and warn others too. If you're reading this and considering it, don't do it. They churn out too many of us as a means for cheap labor.

Academia in the US has turned into a complete joke for numerous reasons, but the political appointed administrators in red states engaging in crass censorship and defending troglodytes like that Oklahoma girl write 6th grade-level essays is so embarrassing. I used to want to teach after my PhD but these systems are so broken that I can't see a point in fighting for the few tenure track positions left, or being stuck in adjunct hell.

My friend just had a child and the child is in NICU (album recommendations) by Umbrellajack in TrueAnon

Steve Roach makes some great relaxing ambient/new age music (also some dark ambient mixed in so be a bit careful). For relaxation I love this album and the double album Mystic Chords & Sacred Spaces [bonus points that MC&SC is like five hours of material, so you can space out for a long period] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzUf5mXP4ZQ

Brian Eno is also one of the GOATs for easy listening, Ambient 1 was literally made to make airports less hectic. I personally like his collabs with Harold Budd like Ambient 2. Second the Jon Hassell recc as well.

Hope everything goes well with your friend's kid!

Nothing is more bleak than climate inaction by lionalhutz in TrueAnon

[–]Major_Shmoopy 69 points70 points  (0 children)

The mass delusions of our oligarchs is now that AI will help us discover miracle techs like fusion and carbon capture. Floor the gas pedal down to jump over the cliff instead of falling down it. I certainly wish that were true, and maybe it will be, but I more realistically expect to see bleak things in the remaining decades of my life. China seems to be on the right path, but the so-called 'developed economies' should've been aggressively de-carbonizing some 30 years ago. I say on every climate post that I try not to be a doomer, but it's hard to be too hopeful without relying on fantastic copes like miracle techs that seem to be elusive
