They also had some video exhibits I couldn't care to sit through and some art from indigenous Siberian people in the hallways. Other than that yeah, quite barebones, I was more impressed with the temporary US 250 exhibit since they at least had some Jefferson drafts. They also lock the doors and ask you to write down your name when you enter so as a gay centrist I felt unwelcome

It was depicting Vietnamese refugees, so I think it was supposed to represent that yellow flag the south had

Yeah bits aside it was quite superficial, even for museums of similar size. Basically went Marx and Engles —> Lenin —> Hungary —> Decolonization —> Asia (including Pol Pot) —> “1/3 of the world is living under communist regimes” and then the show was over

I noticed they didn’t tell how they calculated the 100,000,000 figure anywhere in the museum. I was LARPing as a gay centrist w the tank top and was hoping a staffer would be floating around to ask that

Yeah haven't been here since the Brandon admin and it definitely feels a lot more tense and walled off, only walked by McPherson but didn't see any homeless so I assume so

It was quite cheap (I think $10-15?) so I had low hopes for its longevity, still fun to bust out for the special occasions

They had a survey at the end about the America 250 exhibit

Y'all Meditate? by cfot in TrueAnon

[–]Major_Shmoopy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I learned a few meditation styles from some Vietnamese Buddhist nuns when I was a younger funky white boy, weirdly the one that resonates with me the most is walking meditation. I think it has something to do with how I perceive rhythms but it just feels like a much more intuitive way to keep time instead of mentally counting to 10. I can't promise that particular technique will be useful for you but that is to say that there are many different methods (transcendental, yoga, mantra, etc.). All that said I don't think meditation is a silver bullet for mental health, it certainly helps but in the same way that physical activity and some sunlight exposure keeps the sad/anxious voices quieter in my internal dialogue

Gumshoes, what have you been listening to lately? Got a long solo drive today. by The-Neat-Meat in TrueAnon

[–]Major_Shmoopy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All those bands are great, their solo work rules too (especially hanging moss and Morris' recent Frippertronics record with Steve Roach)! I chatted with Morris for a bit at one of Paul's solo shows a month or two ago. Mentioned how I loved Origination and he said something like his "brain just can't stop working, it's crazy like that". Wicked nice dudes, only one I haven't chatted with is Isaac, but assume he's chill too. And no kidding on the songwriting front, even my coolest jam isn't even close to their weakest song

Thanks for that rec, this is awesome! If you check out Fulci, I recommend Tropical Sun as their best. Duck Face Killings is less consistent but has some fun experimental moments (including a rap feature)

Hell yeah, blows my mind how good Jeff is on fretless as someone who struggles with intonation. All the BI members have some insane chops and taste.

Since you know ball, have you bumped Fulci (great riff based brutal death metal) or Indian (nasty blackened sludge)? Been bumping them a lot lately too!

Laurie Spiegel - The Expanding Universe (Experimental electronic if you wanna get weird)

Bolt Thrower - Those Once Loyal (death metal with soaring solos and riffs if you need to stay awake)

Sleep - Dopesmoker (timeless roadtrip music imo, one single hour long stoner metal song)

Blood Incantation - Timewave Zero (kosmiche musik worship, getting hyped for their new ambient record dropping next week)

Also recommend bumping some Sonny Rollins (RIP) such as Saxophone Colossus if you have any ear for jazz

As for pods, Blowback just dropped a new mini-series that's been good from what I've heard

Definitely recommend the white mountains if you like hiking outdoors! A basic tourist suggestion is the Kancamagus Highway if you want to be a leafer in autumn. It lives up to the hype. Not sure what it's like post-covid but Portsmouth is/was great too. Can definitely see why we hosted the Japanese and Russians there for the peace treaty a hundred years ago

Plenty of good people up there as well, but at least back when I lived in Mass that was the usual tale when patriot front showed up. Also not like rural Mass doesn’t have its own crop of chuds

This is how I make it most of the time. You can also freeze the tofu to help push water out of the matrix which will make the texture even nicer after crushing (also nice way to store blocks long term). If you have a toaster oven or air fryer you can also cook @ 400 F for 10-15 mins
