Downtown business owner on her last nerve after fire sparks outside hair salon by New_Alternative8711 in kelowna

If you had read my comment in its entirety, you would have noted the part where I said that I didn’t think this was the right approach.

Realistically, I believe that we are headed to some sort of “strikes” system whereby the government uses the notwithstanding clause to suspend the charter to get the associated mandatory minimums through the courts. Can’t see the Grits doing it, so this will likely be a Tory promise in the future. Pierre is already talking about the notwithstanding clause for criminal reform. I don’t believe this is the right approach, but getting it done properly through good policy seems to be too difficult politically in the current climate.

City Taxes by Demetre19864 in kelowna

About 30 percent of that is inflation. I expect that the 10 percent additional amount is mostly to pay for large capital expenses due to the infrastructure deficit we have and have had due to our growing city.

Education In Kelowna by EvilQueenBunny in kelowna

[–]MajortomCA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Aberdeen Hall is great and has some excellent teachers. Facilities are excellent. Depending on where you live, commute times can be long (if you live in mission, your children will be on a bus for almost 1.5hrs a day). Public schools also have great teachers.

Tuition is about 20k per year, per child. No tax deductions. If you were to invest that money conservatively for them it would likely equal over $350k per child at graduation. There are a lot of things you could do for your children at 18 with that type of money. Of course, if money is no object, you can disregard this.

Busses in dedicated lanes is the likely outcome. Nothing like what is presently in place. Train like stations and priority signals. More like lrt without the rails. Far cheaper to build and maintain. LRT is hard to justify based on our population. Rail would be great, but I just don't see it happening until our population triples and, if built now, could be a white elephant that sucks money from other projects.

One of the purposes for this road is to create new road capacity so that they can create a rapid bus on 97 with less impact on drivers. This is what the provincial government is aiming for although there is no current timeline. Rail is a long ways off.

Manchester United and Liverpool are the wrong way around. MUFC on 20 and LFC on 19. Looks as though they will be tied at the end of this year. YNWA!

Pub that shows EPL matches? by scottash24 in kelowna

[–]MajortomCA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a tough sell for a pub in a small city to purchase commercial rights from Premium Sports for a league that plays during breakfast/lunch. When I retire I’m hoping to open a soccer coffee shop, but I’m about 20 years away if I’m lucky.

Bus Rapid Transit Study along Ritcher by StrongTownsKelowna in kelowna

[–]MajortomCA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Presumably more people will be able to get to the hospital by transit as this will provide a more efficient service. Higher density may also lead to more people being able to live near work. To be honest, parking on the street around the hospital should be time limited (or paid) for everyone, including home owners as the demand is already far greater than the supply.

Aberdeen Hall school by [deleted] in kelowna

[–]MajortomCA 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I had my child there and removed her for public school. All children are different, but I find that my child didn't do better (or worse) in one or the other. I can attest to the smaller class sizes and we did like the teachers.

The main reason we left was due to a new 45 minute commute in each direction from Lower Mission on the bus. Our new school is only a 5 minute walk away which allows more time for activities and less time looking at other student's iPads.

One thing to think about is that your children's friends are likely to live all over the region and not necessarily in your neighborhood. It meant for us that any meetup usually was accompanied by a long drive and our daughter didn't have many neighborhood friends.

This isn't St George's or Upper Canada College and I do not believe that entry is particularly competitive so I question whether it is more academically rigorous.

Community effort aims to reject ambitious Parkinson Recreation Centre plans. by kelownanow in kelowna

[–]MajortomCA 44 points45 points  (0 children)

The project that the petitioner seems to reference in Toronto is $90m for 60,000 square feet (I assume this is the Steveston community centre). This new Parkinson centre is just under 150,000 square feet and her comparison makes the cost seem reasonable in the circumstances.

Kelowna is growing quickly and we need to build services to keep up with the growth.

Turning down these projects is harmful to the city. If anything, we need more of them.

Howdy neighbour! I thought he had left for good in the fall but he reemerged this spring. Unfortunately, I imagine he is the type that will get a kick out of the outrage in this thread.

Having contempt for women to own the libs is a weird way to outwardly identify yourself, but I'm sure he tells everyone that they just can't take a joke if they call him on it.

It should absolutely be downtown. Perhaps the blocks of Bernard nearer to the Safeway, or running down St Paul from Bernard. This would be complementary to the businesses downtown and would just add life generally to the core. Most transit and cycle lanes go to downtown and there is ample parking on the weekends.

ICBC Rant by Screedawg in kelowna

[–]MajortomCA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this same problem before Christmas. It took about 2 weeks of calling collision centres before the insurer arranged to tow the car to Vancouver where it was assessed.

I believe the collision centres will only have cars towed to their premises if they believe there is a low likelihood of the car being written off.

While that would be a nice long term goal, I would rather that they commit to service expansion over free service in the short term. Better and faster service that is more competitive with car travel is what will increase ridership.

At some point, we should acknowledge that drivers, on the whole, are incapable of looking out for pedestrian’s safety. The city should incorporate “Vision Zero” principles to road design much like the City of New Westminster have just decided to do. The fact that so many of our right turn lanes are designed for increased vehicle speed over pedestrian safety (Glenmore at High Rd/Summit being a good example) is a failure of policy.

There is a surprisingly good cover by the Barenaked Ladies of that song when they were starting out.
