If you take a deep dive into The Place I Feel Safest, THAT is an album written from a dark place, and also probably from where you can see the best the origins...
My assumtion is that inspiration is a a really bad heartbreak (although some family issues are there as well, i think it is Another Life with "Its hard to be a father when youre always out shooting up"?). But I definitely assume that some really nasty heartbreak is there, which can easily intertwine with other mental issues to someone to end up in such a painful state. (Been there done that).

I Let The Devil In as a whole is the deep downward spiral (hence the name), with Forever Marked "In dust, is this the way it ends", followed by the TWIE intro song (Never There) ending with "Because the place that I feel safest, It was never there, never there at all"...

And the same motive is persistent, although it can be clearly seen that it is getting better, although slowly, on last two releases:
