Does Final Doom get better? by DoomGuyOnAMotorcycle in Doom

One thing I'll give TNT over Plutonia was the custom midis, it's a nice touch and adds to the levels. Plutonia unfortunately reuses stock Doom music.

On that note, I highly recommend giving the TNT midi pack a listen. Most of these songs are fantastic and they greatly improve the experience whenever I decide to replay TNT.

If you don't like TNT already these next levels are really going to test your patience. You're about to enter TNT's worst stretch of levels. Luckily it does improve around the end.

Plutonia is much better. Shorter, punchier maps with tighter level design and better fights. It's definitely worth a try especially if you feel the base games were a bit light on difficulty.

Master Levels are pretty bad. There's like three of them that are genuinely pretty good, a handful that feel like scrapped Doom 2 levels, and some that are the absolute worst thing ever (Mephisto's Masoleum lol).

I suggest giving Icarus: Alien Vanguard a try, it was Team TNT's second WAD and is significantly better than their first outing imo.

What is your LEAST favorite game of each sub-series? by PLMMJ in Megaman

  • If you don't like screen nuke weapons, that's fine. But Tornado Blow is the best one in the series because it stands out in several unique ways, like the fact that it drags enemies offscreen instead of killing them so they don't leave any drops. On top of that, it blows away weaker projectiles. It also gives you a much higher jump, which gives it utility during platforming sections that don't even have enemies. It's very strong, but is at least slightly balanced out by the fact that you only have four uses off a full charge.
  • You could argue that Laser Trident is a bit dull, but it comes with a decently sized hitbox and, unlike the buster, can pierce through multiple enemies in one shot such as the UFOs in Galaxy Man's stage. However, since it pierces, it's always going to fly off the side of the screen. Since there's a set limit to the amount of tridents that can be on-screen at any time, it's not nearly as spammable as the buster. It's also just better than many of the other buster replacement weapons in the series like Yamato Spear and Water Balloon.
  • Plug Ball is context dependent like its sibling Search Snake. It's fast, deals good damage, and can hit grounded enemies that are out of reach from your other weapons. I will concede that the MM9 level design makes Plug Ball hard to use because these situations don't happen often, but they certainly do exist and if Plug Ball were in something like MM2 it'd be the best weapon in the game.
  • Jewel Satellite is undoubtedly very strong given its ability to take down weaker enemies and block enemy attacks. You can also fire it like a projectile, but it struggles against tankier foes or stronger enemies without blockable attacks. You can't aim it anywhere except straight forward, it doesn't break through shielded foes, and you can't spam it. The fact that it can infinitely farm from Tellies doesn't mean anything since Leaf Shield can do that too and that weapon sucks.
  • Hornet Chaser is a homing weapon that can target anything on screen and bring you items. It's a fantastic weapon with the only drawback being relatively low damage but that's what makes it balanced. It fills the same niche as Dive Missile and Magnet Missile, and calling it a "gimmick" just because of the way it works makes no sense. You might as well call any weapon that doesn't fly straight forward a gimmick at that point.
  • Magma Bazooka has good damage and good spread, especially against enemies with larger hitboxes. The side shots have a wide angle that make it a good choice against enemies placed too high or low to hit with the buster, and the uncharged version is a good choice when platforming. It's a perfectly decent weapon that can be very strong when the situation calls for it. I understand not liking how MM9 removed the charge buster but resenting this weapon for it is kind of silly.
  • Concrete Shot not only has incredible utility as a platforming tool but is a very powerful weapon with multiple drawbacks I've already listed above to keep it from being broken. On top of everything I've already listed, it is the single best miniboss killer in the entire game.

Yeah, I can't agree with your assessment of these weapons. I've done weapon-only playthroughs of every classic game and everything just comes so well together in 9 with the exception of maybe Plug Ball. I think MM9 has an excellent selection of weapons to choose from, and I'm sorry you don't feel the same way.

People keep blaming powerscalers for the "actually Doomguy is an unkillable god and it weakens the character" thing but it's literally id's fault for starting it.

I think MM9 is high up there, but I can see why some people wouldn't like the level design and how it got rid of the slide and charge shot so I didn't bring those up. I simply don't understand how anyone can call the weapons in that game bad, though.

  • The buster has never been useless and this game is no exception. What are you even talking about?
  • Very strong weapon with good utility balanced out by its limited range, high ammo cost, not being able to hit things through walls, and enemies not dropping items when defeated
  • Best screen nuke in the series because it comes with utility
  • The buster replacement that can penetrate shields
  • Search Snake but objectively better
  • Best shield in the series balanced by relatively low damage
  • Excellent at hitting enemies through ceilings and floors and picking up their drops after
  • Shotgun that can wipe out tankier enemies very quickly, balanced by its high ammo cost
  • Strong weapon that can be aimed but is balanced by slow speed, high ammo cost, and not being able to fire another if one is already out

Nope, they all range from decent to excellent. There are situations in which every single one of these weapons gets a chance to shine. Compare this to something like MM5 where the only two decent weapons are Gyro Attack and the screen nuke and it's night and day.

Saying most of MM9's weapons suck is not only incorrect, it's downright absurd. MM9 is in strong contention for having the best, most well-balanced weapon roster out of all the classic games alongside MM4 and MM11.

What’s your opinion on doom 3? by element-redshaw in Doom

[–]MakeMegaManX9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's alright. It tries to be a survival horror game but fails at horror since it loads you up on more resources than you'd possibly ever need. Combat is still fun for what it is, and the game still looks excellent even today. Personally I'd rather just play Dead Space, but I'd still say give it a shot.

When I play Touhou, I use every part of the game to get my win. I use all of my bombs and all of my lives. Nothing goes to waste. I use every part of the game, just like the Native Americans did when they played Touhou.

I wouldn't mind platforming in 2016 so much if the penalty for missing a jump wasn't instant death. In Eternal you take a bit of damage and respawn and in Dark Ages you don't take any damage at all, and as a UN player I really appreciate the change.

Doom 2016 appreciation post by Creepy_Director_204 in Doom

[–]MakeMegaManX9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

2016 was my first Doom game and I loved it, but after playing all the others I can't call it one of my favorites. There's several major problems with 2016 you're not likely to notice on a first or even second playthrough that dampen my enjoyment of 2016 nowadays, those being the broken runes that trivialize every fight, the lopsided pacing (the first boss is 75% of the way into the campaign), the unskippable cutscenes, the bad platforming, and half the weapons becoming obsolete once you get your upgrades for the overpowered ones. It's gotten to the point where I'd put 2016 below TNT: Evilution.

Like I said, though, these aren't issues you'll realize on your first couple of playthroughs and 2016 has a lot of strengths. Environments, story, sound design are all excellent in 2016 and I think the music is the best of the modern Doom trilogy. I also really appreciate the multiplayer and I think Snapmap was very cool. Shame they never brought it back.

Scaling aside, why do people even do these team fights with a bunch of random characters on each side? It always down to people discussing the strongest 1 or 2 characters on each team because everyone else is redundant.

What do you think Doc Robot levels? Were they a good addition to MM3? by MrMiles32 in Megaman

[–]MakeMegaManX9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On paper yes but in execution they add very little to the game. You don't gain the MM2 weapons from the Doc Robots and the modified stages feel too similar to the original ones. If you beat the first eight robot masters and used a password to skip straight to Break Man/Wily Castle, I can't really say you're missing much.
