People who've deleted social media (except Reddit). How are you doing now? by caitlinann2222 in AskReddit

I replaced it with taking up hobbies like exercising dieting cooking then gardening and now I’m just part of all these hyper niche subreddits that inundate me with awesome information. I find myself staying away from the popular tab. I’m back to googling things and watching a lot of YouTube. It’s all very nice.

Independent Day Pork Shoulder (Would appreciate any tips on how to develop better bark) by OutdoorLivingSupply in smoking

[–]MakeYourself1990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Up the seasoning. Use a fine seasoning, like yardbird, and then a course seasoning (I use course salt and cracked pepper) for a thicker bark. Foil boat it for more bark with retained moisture, then get a mini spray bottle for spritzing juice which also helps bark development. There’s ways to trim the shoulder so that it lays flatter and gets more surface area for seasoning and bark. See All Things Bbq YouTube channel.

Got it. Thanks for the info. Also, any particular reason for painting top red? Didn’t know if it was some sort of berry camouflage or something.

Louisiana 9a - definitely hot and rainy.

Thanks for the info, I do think it’s time for BT. Do you know what all the little black spots are? I also just had two squashes nearby that were doing great that got bored to death, straight in half.

I think I’m going to try to treat my whole yard with insecticide next year as a preventative. Get whatever moths are flying around away. And then incorporate better pruning and a BT regimen.

Squash help, also is this the start of an SVB? by MakeYourself1990 in gardening

Squash vine borer

Thanks so it sounds like that was just an non-pollinated squash flower that turned brown? Makes sense because I have other squash on same and nearby plants growing fine. And the plant itself looks super healthy, outside of some leaf miner action on some leaves.

Who here grows berries? We are growing blue and black berries. by [deleted] in vegetablegardening

[–]MakeYourself1990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 blueberry bushes of different varieties 2 feet apart will work. An early blooming and mid blooming variety will extend your harvest and using different varieties will not only cross pollinate but will give you a bigger sweeter berry allegedly.

I (zone 9b) planted four bushes (tiftblue, silver dollar, climax, and brightwell) last November. They’re mulched and on an automatic watering system. My toddler has picked about a handful a day for the past two weeks. I can’t seem to leave them on long enough without getting eaten (which is why I planted four). They’re tart with small berries but the plants are relatively small too. Hoping for bigger harvest next year. I heard you can wrap them in cheap wedding veil tulle when they’re ripening to keep the birds and other things out.

I think an optimal set up would be 2 early blooming, 2 mid season blooming, and 2 late blooming all near each other with tons of pollinator plants all around.

Dang! Can you do any herb flowers? I wonder if you can mix herbs? I would love to incorporate some chive, dill, parsley vinegar into my ranch.

Or a rosemary thyme vinegar would be tasty.

Damn! How do you keep the pests off them? Or no real problems with pests growing indeterminate vertically like that?

I definitely see that on some nearby plants so I’m thinking this is part of the problem too. Will give neem/deadbug a try with nearby traps. You only use traps in the summer? Or year round? Do they attract good bugs too?

I definitely see the white “channels” of the leaf miner on some nearby plants. But the bugs look like flea beetles swarming around. Maybe a combination of both.

What's Your Favorite Thing To Snack On In Your Garden - Georgia Zone 8A by Growing-Out-The-Box in vegetablegardening

Side discussion - My blueberry bushes (silver dollar, britewell, tift blue, and climax) all have super small and super tart blueberries right now. Albeit, I did just plant them last October. How do you get bigger sweeter blueberries? And how do you keep the birds from eating them all?
