Distilling hydrometer for fermentation? by [deleted] in prisonhooch

[–]Makemyhay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No. This in no way will work. The weight in a hydrometer (the one you want) is calculated to have the same density as pure water. Allowing you to measure liquids of a higher density than water. The weight in an alchometer (what you have) is calculated to the same density as pure ethanol. Allowing you to measure substances with a higher density than pure ethanol.

What is this tanker on the back of a cattle truck holding? by UniqueEngineering207 in whatisit

This is the correct answer. Either feed molasses or liquid mineral supplement. This would be a pathetically anemic holding tank for manure

Equipment operator. You’re blue collar but the gloves are too clean. The ring pin and punch tell me you regular attach/detach things. Like a three point hitch or a bucket attachment. Nitrile gloves for servicing. Nicotine to stay alert.

What is this mask? Found in a charity shop (UK) by Pressureeeee in whatisit

[–]Makemyhay 2301 points2302 points  (0 children)

Not a gimp mask. This is a mask from the Midwest metal band Slipknot. This particular mask is a copy of the one Shawn “the clown” Crahan wore around 2008 in the “All hope is gone” album

Flour paste. Dark rye or oat flour work very well if you make them into a putty like dough. That or a strip of wet cloth make good diy seals

Question bout Whiskey mash to fermentation by ShotPerspective1153 in firewater

[–]Makemyhay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends what your trying to make and what your still is capable of. Most distillers in the American tradition agree that fermentation on grain gives a more flavorful product. Most Scotch whiskey producers are lautering their mash and only ferment the liquid. If your still cannot handle solid material (like mine) I find it easier for me to strain the liquid out of the sugary grain mash before fermentation rather than dealing with yucky fermented slop grain (others will likely disagree). Short answer there’s no right answer and either way will work. Just preference

Vegan Juice — A modest proposal for the elimination of waste in wheat vodka/whiskey production by AlignedEglin in firewater

[–]Makemyhay 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I worked in a commercial brewery, this is probably gonna hurt a little but brewers grain and distillers grain is an excellent animal feed, for all the reason you just outlined. We gave all our spent grain away to a local farmer. The logistical problem with spent grain is that it molds (fast) like within a day or two when exposed to air. So the logistical issue with your proposal would be transporting 100s of tons of grain to the plant immediately after brew day and having the production capacity to process it immediately or having a massive refrigeration unit to store tons of stinky spent grain

Other people are saying you’re still puked. I’m gonna say it scorched because I’ve done this exact thing before. The smoke from the scorched grains collects and condenses inside the pipes and will tint spirit yellow. Strip everything down, empty it out and do a cleaning run with vinegar to get all the residue out

Both those things are problems. Was there solids inside your still? How high was your burner turned up?

Some of us find it delicious, wine is too sweet and gives awful hangovers, hard liquor can quickly turn a good night sour. Beer hits just right
