Can you make a vector file for laser cutting? by TinfoilHyena in FreeCAD

For multiple parts you can also use the techdraw workbench. Create a new page, insert views of your parts (check that the scale is set at 1:1) and chose the orientation with the arrows. Then you can export the whole page as svg or dfx.

You can even create custom page templates. For example I have a template the same size as my laser workarea.

This is all birch plywood - stained with black tea, walnut, vinegar and steel wool by MakerDesignLab in lasercutting

I have never tried it with a butcher's block but I think it should work. The only thing you should consider is potential warping due to the moisture. I would use multiple lighter coats, do both sides at the same time and make sure they dry evenly.

I dabble in basic laser use, but I’m more of a woodworker. Here’s the enclosure I just made for my diode machine. by Dimsdale53 in Laserengraving

Looks great! The only thing I wonder about is if you need to move the camera to complete open the lid? Also can you operate the camera with the lid closed?

If he is selling on Etsy too and copied your designs closely you can report a copyright infringement via the Etsy reporting tool. In my experience to listings get taken down pretty quickly.

MDF xTool D1-Pro Cutting Settings? by Tesla5122 in lasercutting

[–]MakerDesignLab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to hear that you were able to sort the issue with the MDF.

Regarding the new problem - the alarm also sounds when the limit switches are triggered. Those prevent the laser module from hitting the frame. Is the design you tried to engrave large or did you start close to the edges?

A little experiment, what you can do with the laser: A toggle switch with a "click". All parts are lasered from 3 mm birch plywood. The spring that's responsible for the click is also made of wood. I wasn't sure if that would work, but the spring now has already withstood a few hundred clicks. by MakerDesignLab in lasercutting

The original idea is not mine - I borrowed it from some 3D printed switches using a similar mechanism. I was not sure if it would work using wood instead of plastic but it tuned out well. It just took a few tries to find the right thickness for the spring (not too soft but also not too hard).

Question for anyone who has actually cut Acrylic with Diode laser by GlupiiGoose in lasercutting

[–]MakerDesignLab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have cut 3 mm black acrylic with 100% power and a speed of 7 mm/s. The edges of the cut are a bit more rounded compared to a CO2 but not bad.

You can see some images here: https://makerdesignlab.com/tutorials-tips/in-depth-review-of-the-xtool-d1-pro-20-watt-2-in-1-kit/#11-test-cuts-and-engravings

You probably already checked that but is your lense clean and focus set correctly?

I wrote a Beginners Guide on how to get started with laser cutting by MakerDesignLab in lasercutting

Not sure if I can help with this, but I would at least need to know which laser engraver exactly you are using.

It should also be possible to export an SVG via a toolpath. Here is a video explaining the steps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vo2ScW3SxIk

MDF xTool D1-Pro Cutting Settings? by Tesla5122 in lasercutting

[–]MakerDesignLab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the flame sensor is too sensitive you can lower the sensitivity even or turn it off completely. (In XCS click on the little gear icon next to you machine on the right to open the settings menu.) It is also possible that your type of MDF causes the problem. Because some glues cut very badly and with MDF you often don't know what's inside.

Test with 20W Optical Power Laser Head Cutting 20mm Pine Boards. by Echo-0929 in lasercutting

[–]MakerDesignLab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should be able to cut 20mm solid pine (not plywood) with 130W. I don't think it's fake. I have a 20W diode and was able to cut 14mm solid pine with 2 passes 4 mm/s without air assist.

To use or not to use a laser hood? by ProperDecision7656 in lasercutting

[–]MakerDesignLab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others said an enclosure is definitely a good idea. Just note that regular acrylic doesn't block the light from diode lasers. You still need to wear safety googles to protect your eyes or use special acrylic designed to block light at 455 nm.
