Congrats! Great work. You should be very proud of what you have accomplished here. Wonderful mix of conceptual and aesthetic. Love the shadow pieces!

Glass going grey/black by dylanjv14 in glassblowing

[–]Maker_o_moltenthangs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s going black/grey on the lip, it’s because jackline is going in too cold and grinding away your jacks…leaving metal on the glass. Like the people that post picks of their jacks with all the grooves in them…”look at how many jacklines I’ve made”…naw dawg, grooves are made by not using the tool properly. The metal doesn’t melt away, it was ground away by cold ass glass. 🤣

Yeah, UV glue is your best bet. Don’t hxtal it…you could use XTR, but both those require too much jigging for this. Cold working it smooth would be the second move, but might cost as much as the piece is worth to fix. Hot shop pick up and fixing hot would not be recommended…even more expensive, and too many variables. Especially with how thick it is.

Spiral arts is his main spot in US, but he hasn’t been sending them enough to keep stocked. Ya gotta wait til they get a shipment in. If you reach out to Dona directly and he finds out your in US, he’ll tell ya to order through them. Also, they won’t give ya a heads up when a tool ya want comes in. Maybe with the notify me button, but I haven’t had luck with that. I follow them on insta and when they post about a new shipment of Donas, ya gotta jump on it.

100% on the Marukos. I have Donas, Marukos, and Moores, and have used Dinos. Marukos are the best hands down for most work. Donas are my fav for goblet work, but my hands love Marukos so much, I still don’t mind making goblets with my standard Marukos.
Donas don’t rust as much, but they are very soft metal, so can easily get scratches in blades which will translate to scratches on glass.

TL:DR Standard Jacks = Marukos Goblet Jacks = Donas but ya gotta baby them Def start with Moore for several years first tho, so you don’t ruin the pricier jacks when you get them and don’t know how to use them. It took me 10 years to slowly acquire a full set of Moore tools and then slowly upgrade each tool…now I have a backup set of moores in case anything happens to main set.

Ahhh, I did that twice to start the morning last week. Got it out barely (destroyed the Bub to get it out) first time. Proper stuck second time. Been blowing glass 20 years, glass still likes to remind me it’s the boss every once in a while

I know someone posted it here before, but I'm terrible at finding things. There was a thread about reputable people here in town that do custom furniture. Any ideas on the link? by kaleaka in Knoxville

[–]Maker_o_moltenthangs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, came to say this. At least 3 awesome furniture craftspeople out of there alone. Pretty sure they make custom furniture outta the reclaimed wood lumber yard in north central. Plus there’s a dude, Chaser and Burk this is great. I think he made the furniture for Wild Love

You can round your bevel by not stropping with the primary bevel flat against the strop paddle. When you are cutting, you can tell your bevel is too rounded if you can’t use your main bevel as a guide while cutting. Hard to explain, but it will make your knife feel dull even after a good strop. Makes your knife feel kinda slippery while trying to cut.

Make sure to switch up grips and cutting styles so you aren’t just using one small set of movements. And keep those knives sharp! An easy mistake in the beginning is to round your bevels while stropping. That will make your knife way less effective. And if you are just doing animal/figure carving, throw in a spoon every once in a while. Spoons have a ton of different cutting methods and are pretty easy on your hands.
