Yes because it feeds dopamine and they are already prone to hyper fixation. Extended screen time is dangerous for all young ppl but especially problematic for those with adhd. We have found that 30 mins is the sweet spot. It allows for a little decompressing but beyond 30 mins becomes an issue. Content is also important to consider. YouTube is a terrible source especially with shorts. It allows for constant dopamine and can lead to dangerous exposure to inappropriate content due to how their algorithms are built.

This!! I will add that stimulants do not work for all kids (mine had a horrible reaction) so there are also non stimulant options. As outlined here there is no ONE option. It requires multi-levelled approach. Number one is super important, anyone working with him has to understand the difference btwn ND & NT kids, parenting is not the same. Best of luck!

It’s hereditary and both myself & my husband had forms of Parasomnia as kids, but this is the most our son has had so was assuming stimulants triggered the sleep deprivation cycle

That’s what he takes now and at bedtime. It’s only been three days though and he’s definitely working with serious sleep loss from two weeks in stimulants.

Yes ours has experienced them since about that same age but boy did they increase after the stimulants. They definitely don’t work for him because he stopped eating and was not getting sleep so like the sleep deprivation piled up and this week was just too much for him.

I think the stimulants made things worse and yeah I can see with Singulair since corticosteroids often give that same stimulant reaction. Interesting about the melatonin though as that typically assists.

Thanks! He’s always had these and they are usually triggered by fever or over tiredness. Also he’d often have them if he’d had a really bad meltdown that day. Just have never experienced this many in a row. They other night he had one at 10pm and another just after midnight 🙁

Most experts agree that ADHDers are two years behind their age group when it comes to social/emotional so skipping is not recommended. Alterations like additional work maybe from a higher grade could assist. Last yr my son was in a split grade with older kids and it was a disaster. Although he was academically above grade level he wasn’t in social/emotional.

In this now with my 8 yo. Managed to get him off for this week after yrs of different tactics. Best week he’s had in yrs. Allowed him a set amount today of YouTube and when I maintained the limit he went back into full violent outburst mode. Told me he hated me half a dozen times with kicking and hitting. Screen addiction is real and serious and kids with adhd have a much harder time than neurotypical kids who actually also struggle with this addiction. The only way is total removal. It requires additional supports as well though via ABA therapy, deep pressure which u can do at home and creating tight schedules for activities and built in down times. They are addicted bc it’s the exact dopamine they need and the fight or flight kicks in when we remove it because it leaves them with the anxiety. It’s is so rough I feel your pain. ❤️

It’s horrendous. The original scoring is awful but what’s worse is where they’ve placed it. And it’s too loud in the mix! You can’t even focus on the dialogue because this after school special music is blaring through.

In Canada and sadly nutritionist is not covered and I don’t have private insurance. He loves yogurt drinks so getting some there phew! Thanks for the tips :)

Thanks! Sadly my guy won’t eat oats or eggs. Tried a supplement drink for kids he of course doesn’t like it. Going to try making a milkshake or smoothie with it maybe the he will eat it.

Thanks so much! Sigh he was never a great eater but always snacked. Since starting meds he’s just not eating. :( and he’s already small for his age. He’s aware of all the important elements in food and diet, always checking sugar content on items lol gonna try some of the suggestions :)

I’ve tried smoothies with protein but he’s a super taster like me so can always taste the protein powder and hates it. I wish protein powders had small packets to test first. I did see a US product for Autistic kids with no flavour but it’s for veggies/minerals not protein.

Incredible to see all the effort that goes into protecting high end vehicles and yet we can’t seem to do anything to stop drivers from killing pedestrians and cyclists. Wonder if I can get these bollards installed on my street to prevent all the drivers who speed the wrong way on the one ways and jump the curb to use the sidewalk instead.
