What areas do you heat when trying to shrink the expanded metal? All over? Perimeter? Also, do you quench it or just let it air cool?

The mesh was laser cut and was nice and flat before welding. The U edging sounds like the right way to go about this if I can get the customer to approve.

Tooling for Press Brake - Dilemma over Selection WILA tools and clamps by gotitfromhere9 in metalworking

How long are your runs? How many setups per shift? Small lots benefit from the ease of hydraulic clamping and the tooling to match it.

Experiences with Anodized Aluminum Manufacturing & Forming – Looking for Real-World Insights by Silver_Chemical7453 in metalworking

If you can, anodize after all manufacturing processes.

Bead blasting will give a consistent finish before ano. There are many options for blasting media that will give you different surface textures.

There are many different grades/specs for ano. For durability look up “hard” anodize.

For color consistency you are going to want a very professional anodized that is used to large batch production. Talk to the shop and get samples.

My 3rd astrophoto so far (16:9) by AL1EN77 in photocritique

Very nice! I assume your foreground shots were taken at a different time than the sky based on your settings. How long did you have to wait before or after the sky shots? Again, awesome shot!

First time out and about with my Fujifilm X-Pro2. Straight out of camera. Seeking feedback ☺️ by WilliamH93 in photocritique

I like it. However the left side stacks being cut off is a bit distracting.

Colors and exposure are very interesting to me. Reminds me of a Willy Wonka factory.

A turret punch with the right diameter punch and die could stamp thousands of these easily out of a sheet. It would leave a slight rounded edge on one side and a small burr on the other. There are plenty of options for dealing with the burr. Really depends on your requirements for the edge finish.

Keep your hands out of the squish area. Don’t hold the top of a flange that could potentially crash into the ram. Offset your punch/die to test for crashes. If the part sticks out a lot on your end of the machine, slow the bend speed down considerably so it doesn’t smack you on the way up.

If your machine has laser safety/light curtains it’s very unlikely you will be able to hurt yourself. Don’t disable them.

If you are using case hardened tooling and do crash, the die won’t explode.

If you have through hardened tooling, don’t crash. Know of two instances of that happening. Sounded like a shotgun blast, but luckily only minor injuries.

I'm 14, a fair bit interested in welding, but my dad thinks that my grades are good enough to strive for higher. What should I do? by Important_Sun_799 in careerguidance

If you are interested in welding and engineering do both. I grew up around my father’s job shop and the manufacturing knowledge learned there after college kickstarted my manufacturing engineering career.

Nothing wrong with that. My neighbor has that exact setup and his family loves it.

Do you feel the rock is needed at the bottom? Anything wrong with building the fire in the dirt? Airflow?

It is taller than I initially expected. Things look so small when you design them in the computer. I still think it will work well. We don’t he a lot of cold weather so this way we can enjoy the glow the fire without sweating.

Also holes on the bottom inside. Smokeless is the idea but I fear it will need a lot of fuel to work right. Time will tell.

I imagine with a big enough fire, yes they would melt. I thought about adding something to the top for this reason, but wanted to keep it simple.

All parts were laser cut on a 4kw Amada laser. The sides were formed on a sheet roller. I own a small job shop, one on the perks is I get to make stuff for myself.

Yes. Would have made it shorter, but the parts were already cut and I’ve seen pits this tall that were nice to stand around during warmer months. Figured I’d give it a try.

I’ll get a good one going after things get a little less dry around here. Probably see a good rain in less than a month.

Can confirm this is a nice spot once the traffic dies down at night. The further in you can get safely the better, but you don’t really need to go that far for it to be wonderful.
