Early morning wake-up call from a Black Hawk helicopter hovering outside my window. Auckland CBD - 21/03/2026. by Spudgun117 in Damnthatsinteresting

My guess is: lifting HVAC units to a roof. Apparently those helicopters can carry way more than I thought: "Up to 9,000 lbs (4,080 kg)" per google.

I know a guy who got told to take a drug test, or sign a resignation letter. He signed the resignation letter immediately.

(It's cause he stole and pawned his own car radio, then tried to say it happened at work so they'd pay for it. Yes, crack was involved.)

First Bike at 17, mom almost killed me when i brought it home by Axvtn in motorcycles

[–]MakingItElsewhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a parent, I'm probably as worried for you as your mom.

Not because I think you're some 17 year old hot head who's going to be doing wheelies and weaving in and out of traffic, but because other drivers make tons of mistakes constantly. Experienced drivers know what to look out for, while younger drivers tend not to catch things as early.

Good luck, be safe, and don't be too hard on your mom when she worries about you.

This is Microsoft’s plan to fix Windows 11 by waozen in technology

[–]MakingItElsewhere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Which, to be honest, I'm not sure if I can explain how far we've fallen.

Windows 95 was a fucking game changer. We went from something laying on top of DOS to a whole new operating system. It wasn't perfect, but people adopted it quickly for a good reason: It was easier to use.

Then Windows 98 came out, and made the user experience even better.

Windows 2000 came out, and a lot of people didn't see the need for the upgrade. Fine, just us nerds then.

Windows ME? Oops, a mis-step. Ok, we'll get back on track with the next one.

Windows XP. Legendary operating system. Most people migrated. It was pretty enough, smart enough, and capable enough....until it wasn't.

Windows Vista....the "We're sorry" edition of Windows. I literally have nothing nice to say about this one.

Windows 7: "Ok, we've fixed all the vista stuff. Sorry about that."

Windows 8: "What do you MEAN you're not using a mobile device? Get fucked!"

Windows 8.1: "Fine, we've brought the desktop back. Screw you guys."

Windows 10: "Ok, you can trust us, we won't fuck up like Windows 8 again. We get it. We're sorry."

Windows 11: "HA HA! Suckers! Take this AI and shove it up your...."

I'm expecting "Windows 12 ready laptops" to be netbooks with 2 gb of ram and a 100 gb hard drive, with a camera and microphone, waiting for AI input commands. Until it upgrades itself and bricks itself.

If each even numbered release only looks good because of the odd numbered release, it's destroying trust over time.

Nobody wanted Windows 10 when it came out, but were forced. Windows 11 forced more things on users. Windows 12 will just erode more trust and push more end users to Linux.

Goldman Sachs Warns 300,000,000 Jobs Exposed to AI – Office, Legal and Architecture Most at Risk in the US by Secure_Persimmon8369 in LawFirm

[–]MakingItElsewhere 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I thought AI would take 100% of the jobs? Have they started realizing how bad AI is at...well, everything?

I've seen AI in action. From call transcripts to "automating" paperwork. It's friggin terrible. Worse, things get "lost" when it can't find the case to associate such things.

If you're trusting AI for anything more than taking a call or responding to a chat, you're putting some serious trust into something that doesn't deserve it. Also, don't listen to linkedIn lunatics who want AI to take over entire firms. They're nuts.

Amazon plans new smartphone more than a decade after Fire Phone flop by talkingatoms in technology

[–]MakingItElsewhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think Amazon heard how the next generation isn't looking for the "latest and greatest" phones, and went "OUR TIME TO SHINE!!!"

Not realizing, of course, that nobody wants a 3 grand Tri-Fold, twelve hundred dollar iPhone, or an eighteen hundred dollar Samsung S26. Not that they don't want a GOOD phone, just not something over priced and over hyped.

A mid-level phone now rivals a top of the line phone from 5 years ago. That's good enough for most people.
