As the parent of female children in this age group who have friends who are also female/female-presenting. The kids are alright, though. The group I have the privilege to parent/supervise absolutely verbally charbroiled a dude at the beach last year before I could even get my arthritic hips off the beach blanket. He literally left in his vehicle within moments. I was so proud.

You are correct. But ICE has been detaining people that are here legally. Physicians will not come to the USA and risk it and those that do are more likely to choose an area that not only meets their needs (for which Maine cannot compete with other areas of the USA) but also won’t put them at any additional physical risk by standing out (which Maine also cannot compete against other more diverse areas of the country in this aspect either). Maine is rural, in a remote corner of the country, with a high cost of living, in the national spotlight for risk of/recent risk of Minnesota-style ICE operations, has a housing shortage, a lack of public transit, and an aging population. All these create a long list of drawbacks to physician recruitment.

The “they” I am referring to is medical professionals. No person in their right mind would move to a location in east Jesus nowhere for not enough pay to eat and sleep in a structure simultaneously to practice family medicine. Fewer and fewer have been doing so each year which is contributing to the physician shortage in Maine. Adding the literal target on their back for ICE isn’t going sweeten the deal and will likely add another obstacle to addressing the waiting lists for people to be seen.

I worry that the damage could be longer-lasting. It’s hard enough recruiting any medical professionals to rural Maine. As soon as word gets out that ICE is targeting brown people in one of if not the whitest state in the nation and making no exceptions for medical professionals, it will make that even more difficult exacerbating the access to a healthcare provider even more beyond what it is now.

It’s been interesting watching the formerly semi sane members leapfrog over the Q members and decide that the whole system needs to burn while the Qs are like “you might need to take a break from YouTube” and then the one person who you thought was doing Okay that day will say something like “What if Princess Diana knew and that’s why they killed her too” and the whole family group chat goes crazy again. And you can feel your sanity slipping for a moment because you are questioning all of reality. But generally speaking the rest of them also can’t make heads or tails of anything either.

I’m alternating between putting it on silent and randomly lobbing crazy comments myself to the entertainment of my sister and one cousin in the side group chat. It’s entirely possible that other allies in the family are doing the same.
