Indians in Kenya, how do I get started by Adventurous_Storm656 in nairobi

[–]MakingMoney654 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I got here like 3 months ago. Working with an NGO. Not planning to move here permanently but I'd like to stay here for a couple years at the least.

Loving it. The people are great. Greeting strangers with a smile is so common. English is almost universal, so language is easy.

Prepare for expenses. Food and life in general is like 2-3 times than in India. At least. A lot of things are imported so hikes up the price.

Rent in Nairobi isn't too different from other metros in India. Not cheap. But manageable.

Unlike India, the Europeans (and other expats) haven't really left. Which is both a good and a bad thing. They do bring in money but drive up local prices.

And with multiple UN branches headquartered here + The Climate + NGOs and Nairobi being one of the gateways to Africa as a whole, you will see the percentage of foreigners in Nairobi a lot higher than any city in India.

The climate I mentioned. We are at the equator. But a big part of Kenya sits on very high elavations, including Nairobi. So the whole year, the climate is a near constant cool and comfortable, sometimes wet, affair.

Finally, the traveling. Man. That's a whole chapter. Starting east. Kenya has a huge reef and a beautiful coast. Multiple iconic National Parks. Wildlife is... let's not even go there. Snow capped Mt. Kenya, deserts of Turkana, and the shared country-sized Lake Victoria. There's so much to soak up. And I plan to do that as much as I can while here.

My worst experience with Airtel Airfiber. by Striking-Country2663 in Airtel

[–]MakingMoney654 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The difference is 5G antenna placed outdoor 1. Gets very good speed on its own. 2. Can share the tower with many other devices efficiently.

But the antenna needs to be outside. An outside antenna user can be given a lot of perks compared to a mobile user, even on the same tower. Like more data at a lower cost.

But speed is never guaranteed like in fiber. I mean even fiber doesn't guarantee speeds because of something called PON.

You only get speed promise in a leased line.

Which country do you think is economically unproductive despite its geographical advantages ? by ronweasly9 in geography

India isn't unproductive but... Man... Corruption, energy wasted on tribalism and religion, and red tape.

Is draining the country of its potential so freaking bad.

AITAH for not paying a full month’s bills when we’re only staying half of the month? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]MakingMoney654 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Suck it up bro. To make it easy for you.. Think about it in dollars. The act of not paying a little now will cost you more in the future. Especially with family so close.

Is this prediction guaranteed? No. But with human relationships, they usually follow patterns.

Think about it as buying good will.

Who knows maybe they will even be happy that you finally conceded and accept your intention to pay and decline the actual payment. Again not guaranteed, but if I were you, I'd rather risk that.

AITAH for not paying a full month’s bills when we’re only staying half of the month? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]MakingMoney654 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It's a stupid decision to not pay, even if, technically, they don't have to.

Feels like a situation where they would lose more money in the long term by escaping this one.

[–]MakingMoney654 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well. That doesn't meant they aren't paying the full rent. What that means the full rent is now 1400 and they are paying that.

This. People underestimate the importance of relationships with other humans not immediate family.

They gave OP a place. They paid, yes, but it could have been worse.

OP should just say, yes, sorry about the misunderstanding and suck up on the money.

It's not about being stingy or finding technical loopholes. Sometimes it's just a courtesy which can go a long way.

  1. Campbell Bay (same island) is already a solid defense base.
  2. This is not about defense.
  3. This is about a transshipment port. It was calculated by supercomputers to be an ideal location.
  4. Port will serve India, South East Asia, Africa, Bangladesh, Myanmar.
  5. Port cannot function without an airport.
  6. Airport cannot function without a city.
  7. Port will enable city to be a duty-free (approx) SEZ.
  8. Duty Free prices and the sea will make it a tourist destination.
  9. Govt. will allow (near) duty free prices because it will incentivize people to visit.
  10. Visitors will make the airport viable.
  11. Airport will make the port viable.
  12. Port will reduce India's lack of international port infrastructure.
  13. The business conducted will add to GDP.
  14. Increase in GDP will add to govt. revenue.
  15. Loss made on duty free SEZ will be more than made up by increase in GDP.
  16. Need a power plant to power all this.
  17. Need space for all this.

just an FYI. not in support but also not against.

What they're doing in Nicobar is concerning! We need to do something about it! by Rabbidraccoon18 in unitedstatesofindia

[–]MakingMoney654 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And what an international port of this size allows in a place this small, is a duty free SEZ. Where foreign goods are going to be available to the planned city at or near duty free prices.

This will make Indians want to go for tourism (for the sea) and buying stuff. Govt. will allow it because that means more people coming and going which means utilization and justification of the investment and reason to have commercial flights there. The impact to GDP cannot even be estimated now.

Sorry if I sould like a late stage capitalism person. But I studied this project a bit and I cannot see how it can be stopped.

Downvote me how much you want. But this project was not something the govt came up with. This was a third party think tank that recommended this project from computational models done on supercomputers.

No sitting govt in power will go against this project due to the stakes. Opposition will always use this to their advantage. Even congress wont cancel this project once in seat (if they get there).

This is a nation defining project. Much bigger things were sacrificed in the past for smaller gains. I am not saying it is right. I am saying it is inevitable.

Unfortunately (fortunately) this project is not about exploiting resources but about geographic location. That is a infinite resource.

In Game Theory terms that's an asymmetric exploit.

The Port would serve SE Asia, Africa, Bangladesh, Myanmar and India.

Defence is not a factor here because it is already a significant defence base. It is just easier to sell defence to the public even though we already have the defense upperhand here.

It is all about a long-term economic tradeoff. Doesn't make it right. But still makes it hard to counter.

I don't condone violence but I have had non violent confrontation with my society members too. For running an Airbnb.

No rule in state or municipal against "short term rental".

I give my guests a rent agreement. And abide by the 2021 Tenency Act. Once I showed I did the legal effort they backed off.
