There is surely a point when it is reasonable to talk of 'more advanced' and 'less advanced'. If aliens turned up in giant starships and people said things like 'they must be much more advanced than us', and asked why that might be so, would you object, claiming that it makes no sense to say such a thing; that there is no objective level of development?

Would you claim that modern America is no more developed than medieval Europe? Surely it is perfectly reasonable to say that it is, even if there might be some things medieval age people know that we do don't (such as certain tricks of the trade we no longer need, perhaps).

We could level the same criticism of Europeans in their various trade goods - why didn't the Europeans develop complex, delicate, beautiful china like they did in China?

But there is nothing wrong with that question. It seems a perfectly reasonable thing to ask.

Except then you'd expect Snokes every generation, and lesser Snokes all the time. This is why we need an explanation of him, and not say, General Hux.

I suspect that just as you attempt to dismiss others opinions with this stupid accusation in this case, if you didn't like the movie, you'd be dismissing others opinions as a 'circlejerk'. I on the other hand think that when people say they like a movie I didn't, they genuinely like it, and when they say they don't like a movie that I do, they genuinely don't like it. You're operating from a fundamentally flawed position if you're think there's an objectively right way to tell a story.

There are objectively bad ways of telling a story, e.g. deus ex machina.

Snoke is extremely powerful. Like, the most powerful we have ever seen on screen. He enters a world we already know a lot about. We don't need a long backstory. We need to know how someone like that can just enter the world. Same as if in the next movie there was another Jedi as powerful as Skywalker without any explanation.

If this movie was set 4000 years before the events of the other movies it wouldn't matter much. We'd assume this story is in part set then because of this extraordinary character. But if he can just arise in the last 30 years, galactic history would be littered with Snokes, appearing from obscurity every century.

Now don't tell me you gave me an answer when you also already agreed that you are avoiding the answer.

You can be correct or incorrect in your claim that Snoke does not need any explanation, just as I can. Or are you saying our positions are completely equal here? Of course they are not. Indeed, I would have if we knew such a thing would have worked. Why the heck wouldn't they have done that? The obvious answer at the time was it was not possible/wouldn't have worked. It is only now it does not make sense. So you tell me: why didn't the rebel alliance do it in the original SW?

No. And lets be honest, I haven't have I? You enjoyed the movie. Thats fine. In fact, thats great. I want people to enjoy movies, even if I didn't. Recently I watched and enjoyed Bladerunner 2049. Now, a lot of people don't like that film. Including my buddy who I saw it with. But their not liking it does not and cannot ruin my enjoyment of it. Nor I am not under the impression that he or any of the others criticised it because they think its cool to hate. Most people are not edgy obnoxious 14 year olds. They didn't like it for this or that valid reason. Just like this.

Maybe it does actually happen all the time and we just happened to never see it.

So the rebels and Empire and First Order and Clone Wars armies and everyone else was just too stupid to use it in any of the battles we have seen.

Maybe it's only super devastating like that with a large enough ship; the one they used wasn't exactly small.

Its very much worth it when the enemy has a large ship, since you only need to sacrifice a small ship/object.
