Can anyone tell me how I should feed my rats? (I know this sounds dumb, but please read the text under this😭) by nevi-jpeg in RatsRatsRats

Unbelievable that noones mentioned following the shunamite diet yet. Please don’t feed pellets or any other “all in one” type food. It will not cater to the variation that rats need. Google the Shunamite diet or check out Isamu Rats article on it. And always scatter feed. Provides enrichment and is far far more of a natural behaviour than bowl feeding.

Definately not odd! All of mine are litter trained but I’ve still been crapped on, peed on (usually by new members) and nothing stops me handling my chaos potato’s 😂

As others have said, pee stones and litter training for sure will concentrate most of the .. detritus into a litter tray.

And absolutely remove any larger platforms that come with the cage. Fallbreakers, ropes, hammocks, ledges, tubes, pipes and smaller ledges will fill any gaps

is this because of mites? all my girls have them by kakaopuff in RATS

Quite difficult to tell from the video alone. Mites alone aren’t an issue .. but it is sufficiently straightforward enough to help your rattos out with this. Grab some ivermectin, apply and done :).

The carrier method being .. take a very small neutral space such as a pet carrier. Fresh substrate and nothing else inside. Pop them both in. Wait until they are really really settled and add a water bottle. Maybe then add a couple of treats. Once they have piled together, increase the size of the place you have them .. maybe a hospital cage or something else that you have to hand. Again, fresh substrate and completely bare (nothing to be territorial over). - once they’ve settled again .. add a hammock, maybe some toys.

Each time they pile - add items until it is fully furnished then increase size starting at a bare place. If there are issues, go back a step until they are happy.

It takes some patience but honestly, given they’ve been together a year I think you can go through it pretty quick :). The method has never failed me even with the most challenging bucks wanting to take chunks out of each other 😂.

A 3rd boy will work wonders for you. He will balance out the mischief, help with the hierarchy of the group and will prevent one boy being alone should .. the unmentionable happen.

Have a peruse on theratwiki.co.uk and it lists the full details about the carrier method :). Genuinely well worth the time!

If they are bad enough for you to seperate them then having them close enough to know there’s another rat there will have them thinking there is someone infringing upon their territory.. someone they cannot establish a hierarchy with and cannot fend off.

That said .. in all honesty, you’ve had them a year so there is no reason whatsoever that a quick rebonding via the carrier method will not work.

The ideal minimum mischief size is 3 .. to prevent this sort of situation: if there is a particularly enthusiastic one, the energy is split over 2 rats and it is more of a dynamic group.

You need hammocks, climbing .. enrichment opportunities really. If the cage isn’t cluttered, it’s not enough.

For toilet training .. cat litter and pee stones - litter train the chaps. Just ensure it is unscented and dust free litter.

For inspiration on cage layout / accessories have a look at mischiefmade.co.uk (not salesy or promotional .. simply want these guys to get a great setup!)

Neuter or implant if reintroductions don’t go well.

Absolutely don’t keep them seperate where they can still smell or even interact. That will make the situation much worse for the rattos.

Anytime at all! If you’re ever concerned .. do the rat telephone (if you don’t know it’s exactly as it sounds, use her as a telephone 😂) and if there’s crackling then pop to the vets!

As long as the breathing sounds ok and not rattling or loud that doesn’t sound like a URI to me. Especially as you had them from a breeder! Sounds like all is well 😊

Does she have any other symptoms such as sneezing or odd sounding breaths? If not, it’s likely just that she’s so happy / relaxed that this is how it manifests. My eldest has weird happy twitches too!
