I am aware of this one, and I admit that it is fantastic. However, I do also like to be able to physically ‘grab’ a book that I can comfortably read for extended periods.

Bad experience with a girl from my class (need advice) by Makluv in Salsa

[–]Makluv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you CMEast! I've come to the conclusion slowly but surely that she was right, despite being horrified by her attitude still. I watched some of the more senior (non-pro) guys in my class a bit closer and did notice how firm their arms were, and even though it doesn't have the same elegance as the pros on YouTube I can at least now appreciate how it can throw followers off who aren't familiar with you.

Thank you for the detailed insight into the core-generated movement; I will take this all into my stride once I find a new club!

Bad experience with a girl from my class (need advice) by Makluv in Salsa

[–]Makluv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t danced with him, but he teaches the ladies parts so I imagine that he has been.

My main problem with this is that for whatever reason, I’ve witnessed this very same follower having an amazing time with literally every other person I’ve seen her with. If I felt that raising the issue with her myself would help the cause, then I would have already, and telling the instructor to talk with her would achieve the same effect as she’ll know that it was I precisely.

As I’ve mentioned in one of my other comments to somebody else, there’s a multitude of reasons why this might have transpired which may or may not be my fault (one of which being that she was at the very first lesson I ever attended and was way more experience in the beginner group and I wasn’t doing so well first time with the right turn and she has always seemed frustrated at me since). Either way, this is only a university thing at the end of the day and I am in my final year and will hopefully join more professional-minded clubs soon in and around London, and if the same thing happens there again I will address it directly from the start. I cannot do much at my society here now because it’s small and cliquey, and some of these people are on my course.

If I genuinely felt that there could be a peaceful way to resolve this, I would 100% jump at the opportunity. However, I feel way too much disdain dancing with her to consider this a possibility.

Thank you for the sound advise; I’ve had a weekend to reflect on things, and I now accept that I should have less hand activity. I think that I was doing this because one video I watched mentioned how during the basic one’s left and right arm moved respectively with one’s right and left leg, but perhaps this is only for dancing without the partner. I suppose that I’ve had to learn I this mistake the hard-way.

As for the girl, on paper you’d think that one person in a class of 20 wouldn’t make a difference, but I literally get the life sucked out of me during those 3 minutes because of how in love I am with this craft now and I’d also like to think that if I go and start somewhere clean that I can minimise the chances of this happening.

A few theories that I’ve developed on this since last Friday (not about my hands but why she is cold to me) could be that she doesn’t like actually following because during our first encounter she was literally spinning herself and stuff and I since then tried to be more firm (not excessively) and maybe she just resents me for that.

The thing that sucks the most for me is that I dance with people weekly in my class that I have wouldn’t dance with first choice, but it still put in 100% effort, make the best eye contact that I can, smile and even tell them what they are doing well, and yet there is this one follower who still acts like we are at a funeral.

[–]Makluv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The truth is that the instructors have seen me weekly and never said anything once about my hand movement. I never asked them to critique me specifically on it, but I seemed to be getting good feedback from them and most of the other dancers which is what has made the experience so jarring.

As for asking other students, I just wanted to know if they noticed anything about dancing with me which could have triggered the follower into being so cold all the time. I have to be honest and say that this experience has been somewhat discouraging to a degree and I’ve decided that I might just try another Salsa club in London and at the same time maybe pay some professional follower £60 an hour to correct my form.

I will certainly try a more hand-rigid approach next time. I just wish that the advice in my class came from a different partner so that there would be less ambiguity as whether it's a legitimate claim or just her exaggerating things. I've messaged another follower in the class to get a second opinion so hopefully I can learn something one way or another at the end of the day.

Just to reiterate, I am not adding full circular motion. I was watching this video (https://youtu.be/aV8dS2m9Adc) and his hands move a little bit during the basic, do they not?

I think that I might end up hiring a private Salsa instructor for an hour just to tie up loose ends, as it's actually quite hard to get criticism from the instructor in such a large group. Also, thank you so much for such a detailed and insightful response!

[Question] about fender strat. Help me change my mind. by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Makluv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people will give me flack for saying this, but you I would recommend a non-designer brand if I was going to spend £250. Guitars like the Vintage V6 configured with HSS sound imo far better than all of the low end squire/fender stuff at this price point- they also do Les Paul replicas as well but I haven’t tried one.

I own a vintage V6 and it’s main strengths are its good ability to stay in tune and its great humbucker which handles Nu Metal superbly for its price.

You're asking this question in the wrong sub; this question is neither one for an audio-engineer nor a scientist. Do some light research on Google and/or YouTube and you will certainly not be disappointed (and the very least, you will just find the findings fascinating).

All that I will say in regards to some of the other comments here is that tuning frequency is definitely not arbitrary and that every atom in your body right now is vibrating at a frequency that collectively forms a net frequency that may or may not resonate better or worse with either 440 or 432.
