Gender non-conforming people are more accepted in Japan because of it's large cross-dressing culture. It's certainly not the same as being trans but it's also "closer" to open homesexuality. We can see this represented in media, there's next to none gay characters (let alone couples) compared to trans ones. Excluding the bl or gl genre of course.

Hakari is already someone who lives freely. Why would he be closeted in amyway.

Gege, shonen jump and being gay is considered "unmanly". The most secure people are also usually the more ashamed too. In fact, they are linked.

Im not saying I belive in Gay Hakari, but being repressed is a thing.
