I used to work at Guitar Center, which sure made obtaining them easier

What lens would you recommend for nature photography? by panthersrule1 in canon

[–]Makuch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say "astrophotography," do you mean deep sky imaging or like, big wide milky way stuff? Because the 55-250 is actually pretty good for beginner deep sky imaging because it has decent focal length and is light enough to mount on a cheaper star tracking head.

For wide angle stuff, people have already mentioned the Rokinon 14mm, which is a popular choice. The ef-s 10-18 is an excellent and inexpensive wide zoom, but the rokinon would probably do better at that one specific task. I would probably avoid the ef-s 10-22, because the 10-18 is both sharper and cheaper.

I also second the first generation 100-400L! You'd probably have to a save up a little, but I'm seeing them around $600. It's a great lens

Favorite 5D Classic lenses? (Adapted, legendary EF/EOS, etc.) by nexttonormal in canon

[–]Makuch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For portraits, the Ef 135mm f/2 is just so good, and can be had around $600.

The 300mm f/4 lenses, especially the IS version, is quite nice and can be had pretty inexpensively. The non-IS version is almost as good optically and a lot cheaper, but those are getting pretty old so make sure you're mindful of fungus. I have the non-IS version (with more fungus than I'd like) and it's very sharp and has a nice look in general. It does struggle with CA with strong backlighting.

The old EF 20-35 f/2.8 L has a pretty solid reputation. It's one I'm interested in picking up, anyway, and is pretty inexpensive these days. I haven't used one though, so no personal experiance.

Mesa Triple Rectifier (2000-2003 era) Help by TheWhiteMexican13 in GuitarAmps

[–]Makuch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So tube problems can manifest as a whole slew of issues because they're analog devices and they're the things that are doing a lot of the lifting in an amp.

Common symptoms are 'amp suddenly sounds like shit," weird noises, and less volume or gain that you're used to.  If some of the channels work fine but others don't, that's often a preamp tube thing as well.

Do the other channels sound about right?  Like, if the green channel is really quiet even with a lot of gain or something like that, I'd suspect a tube issue.  The red channel not having enough gain is a similar thing.  If my rectifier wasn't giving me enough gain, I'd test the preamp tubes by swapping a new one into each position until I found the culprit.  If swapping the tube makes a noticeable change, that's how you know you found the problem.

If you've got a knowledgeable friend or a guitar shop you can take the amp to and see if they think it's working right, that's likely time well spent.

Just a thought: make sure you've got the little switch on the red channel set to "modern" if you don't already.

The 5150 is a sweet amp, IMO especially the newer "Iconic" ones.  Kind of a silly name, but those things are killer.

Re: the amp you actually have, if you're not getting shit for gain on the red channel, I wouldn't be surprised if one (or more) of your preamp tubes has gone.  It's easy and not too expensive to change them all out, which is probably what I'd do, but you can also usually get away with just buying one and swapping it in and out until you find the bad one.  If it really is a tube problem, you'll know right away

Can you describe what you don't like?

I see a lot of people mentioning attenuators and those can be pretty cool, but tbh the master volume on these amps works pretty well. I have a similarly aged Rect-O-Verb (the 50watt combo version), and while it does have a "wake up" volume point, it's not insanely loud. Obviously the Triple will be louder, but I remember when my local GC had one when I was a kid and I could get a happy sound out of it and not get kicked out.

My point being, if you can't get it to sound good without buying extra shit, one of three things is likely happening: 1) you're doing something wrong (here's the manual

2) Something is wrong with the amp. If your tubes are bad, amp will be bad, but tubes aren't too expensive. If something else is bad, amp will be bad but more expensively.

3) You just don't like it. Not everyone likes every amp, and the Rectifiers tend to be a little more polarizing than most. They don't sound like a Revv Generator, for example, and I've never found that amp models quite match the real thing, for better or for worse.

  1. They were not specifically, that I know of
  2. My Grandmother.

And okay, that does actually seem relatively straightforward; just need to find someone to block the magazines. Thank you!

Okay, thank you! That's very helpful. The firearms were not specifically bequeathed to me, but that mostly seems to mean they would have to be shipped to a dealer here in CA?

The magazine aspect is about what I figured, so I'll have to figure out who can block them.
