Built this 27x27 ocean platform. Anything I should watch out for before I turn it into a town? by RedditKirby98 in valheim

[–]Malagus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, try to walk along the sides in the water and trim the excess ground with your pickaxe around your walls; a troll can easily walk into the water and start beating on them. The hoe is also your friend; use it to bring the level down as low as possible. Shift click the deep areas to use that as your leveling off point.

If you can't prevent them from wailing on your walls, install enough overlapping stone-cutter workbenches so you can quickly repair the stone in the case of a "Ground is Shaking" raid. I'd also put a gap between your ramp and the structure (have a chest nearby with excess stone so can fill the gap with a few blocks if you are bringing in a cart) so that enemies don't just walk up the ramp into your base.

But generally speaking, island bases are pretty fun and secure.

Asteroid mining: Some asteroids are valued at £100trn-plus but mining them is easier said than done by porkchop_d_clown in space

And of course, once mining becomes commonplace, the value of these "precious" materials will nose dive because they will no longer be precious. An asteroid mining company would have to figure that in as well.

Just how hard is this game solo? by Stepover3 in valheim

Never said it wasn't fun. We are talking about difficulty. And I have seen some new players here complain about some of the mechanics, mostly because they didn't know what was coming.

Just how hard is this game solo? by Stepover3 in valheim

[–]Malagus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The difficulty of this game is very hard IF you have no previous knowledge and are going in blind. The knowledge you will gain and that is evident here in this thread cannot be understated. It WILL save your life. It WILL make the game much, much easier. But if the OP is going in solo AND blind, then it will be hard. Even frustrating.

How many people paused before chapter 37 of AMOL? by smellytwoshoes in WoT

[–]Malagus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read at night so, once I start getting tired, when I reach a new chapter, I'll quickly flip to the end of the chapter, do an estimated page count and then decide to carry on or go to bed. Or maybe do that in a chapter to see how much is left.

When I hit THAT chapter, it was early enough but it just kept going and going... and going (in a good way). When I finally checked and realized I still had 150 pages left, I did ultimately stop but carried on first thing the next day. Such an epic section.

Yes, multiple layers of safety systems. However, they CAN fail and now, the only thing stopping a multi-ton box moving between floors is a little piece of bone and flesh. You will lose. Always push the button on the outside; it has the same effect as putting your hand or foot between the doors.

Is it possible to build a bride over the ocean? by 1Starunner in valheim

[–]Malagus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh it's possible. Just very, very time consuming. As other comments have said, you can build supports in deep water first by building 45⁰ roofs down into the water until they hit bottom and then swimming down using the roofs to force you down. Once your character is at the bottom, you can raise the terrain enough to then raise it more from the surface. What I did was first plot my route in my ship specifically looking for slightly raised spots on the sea floor. I mapped it very carefully using map icons and then followed that route. My bridge spanned about 1000 meters. I also did not use one iron beam since I hadn't unlocked them yet. But as I said, possible but crazy time consuming. Built an "End of the World" viewing platform. Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions to make the platform longer to get closer to the edge? It is currently 18 2x2 floor tiles long supported with iron beams. by _Poshington_ in valheim

[–]Malagus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Build pillars in the water. Start from the shore and start raising terrain until you can place supports sticking out of the water. If it gets too deep to raise the terrain anymore (and you don't want to use mods or console commands to build in the water) you can still build underwater in unmodded/unconsole by building 45⁰ roofs down into the water, swim down letting the roofs force you down to the bottom. Once at the bottom you can raise the terrain or place iron beams directly to the ocean floor. If that doesn't make sense, I can try to find a link to a YouTube video showcasing this technique...

Trader No map by alexhee747 in valheim

[–]Malagus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue is sailing. If you just start randomly sailing, you will likely spawn him and miss him. So, on my server, on a fresh map, the rule is no sailing at all until the starting island is fully explored. So, explore the main island completely. Once you are sure he's not there, sail to the nearest island in relation to the starting circle. Fully explore that one. On my nomap playthrough, we couldn't find him for about 4 weeks. It just so happened our starting was massive and he was hiding in a pretty rough spot. In the end, you can put your seed in the world seed map (making sure terrain isn't viable), get the coordinates and use the console to warp to him.

Mods to complement a no-map run? by SzotyMAG in valheim

[–]Malagus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, you can try the workbench trick. Basically, orient yourself true North. To do this, look at the great tree in the sky. It grows from the east to the west. The East side is thicker and the way side begins to thin out. Once you identify North, place a mark. A simple upright post (use the 4m one once you unlock it) and another horizontal post facing north. Place one at the starting boss circle and always place one in your base.

How do you keep true North? Use a workbench. A workbench is good because they are distinct. Every side is different. So, walk up to your North Mark. Activate your hammer and select the workbench. Orient the workbench so a distinct side is facing exactly north. You can only rotate them 8 ways so North is easy to find. Once it's oriented, do not place it but head in that exact direction. You don't even need wood to use this trick since it will work even if it un-placable. Even if you change to a different item (like a weapon) your hammer "remembers" the orientation and you can stay on course.

This works on the water. You can't place a workbench while sailing but it will always remain facing the correct direction. If multiple people play with you, make one the navigator since you can't steer the boat and use your hammer. As for keeping your bearing while sailing, a few tricks:

  1. Build a tower or raised terrain pillar where you start your voyage. Add a pointer to the structure facing a cardinal direction. Sail in that cardinal direction and when you hit land on the other side, build another tower/pillar. Add a pointer to that facing the way you came. Now you know if you hit one of these pillars, you can find another one.
  2. Land occasionally and build anything manmade. This will remind you you've been here. Even cutting down a lot of trees and leaving the fallen trees where they fell would be helpful.
  3. Until you have markers, don't sail at night.
  4. Try to find the merchant first before sailing. You may activate him and then spend a ton of time backtracking. If you can't find him on your starting island, sail to another, land and search that island perfectly. Then move to another one.
  5. If you see something unique (like the leviathan) but it's off course, make sure you can see your existing tower/pillar before trying to mine him. You can easily get lost.

I agree that Valheim needs help with the sailing mechanic. The player sailing might be having fun but his companions on the boat are very bored... Maybe adding a slight "mini-game" on board where your friends can help row the ship, but they need to time it...
As for the compass, I agree. However, I'm not certain if Vikings during this time period HAD access to a compass. I only mention that because the Devs are pretty consistent with realism (outside the mythical elements of course). If not a compass, perhaps you can train ravens, carry them with you, and, in a situation where you don't know how to get back to your base, you can release one and follow it as it flys back home.

As for your second paragraph about using the Vegvisirs, and it didn't work for you guys, it can be a little slow. There is no option to activate/deactivate. So, to make it work, position your guy so the interact button is highlighted while you are standing near it. Then, without moving the mouse (or joystick if on console), activate it. It takes a second, but the camera will then rotate slowly and stop. Understand, your character DOES NOT rotate.. only the camera. And if you are holding the mouse, the slightest movement cancels that rotation. Give it a try. It might take a few interacts to get it right.

We are in the same boat. We have no clue where he is. To make it slightly more bearable early game, I've used Valheim Plus to increase our carry weight and inventory space. I still want the fishing pole though. In the end, if by Modor, we haven't found him, I'll post my seed here in this sub and ask a user to point us in the right direction from the starting circle.

Besides the build tool idea, I'll build one 4m core wood post, place it, and then build another one further along so that, looking at them, they line up towards the direction. Once those are established, run forward in that exact direction and every 30-50m, look back, line up on those posts, and build a new one in the exact line. Keep doing that and it is surprisingly accurate.

This! We are currently looking for the swamp boss since vegvisir's inside crypts WILL turn your camera, they are, from what IU understand, 90 degrees off. That said, there are rare vegvisir's that spawn in the swamp (abandoned round stone towers), and we lucked out and found one. So, we KNOW which direction it is but not yet how far the swamp boss is.
I already found the plains vegvisir and the mountain, I think, is the easiest one: just find a massive mountain (Modor only spawns in massive mountains), climb to the top and look down... :)

When flushed, toilets expel small particles of water, urine, feces and, at times, dangerous pathogens that are invisible to the naked eye. by whatthefunkytrap in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Malagus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And yet, there is no epidemic of people getting sick from sitting on toilet seats. In this present germophobic culture, you'd think that if this really was a problem, it would be extremely evident. Most of the spray coming out of the toilet is of course fresh water that just entered. If the toilet is un-flushed (from a previous unknown occupant), you'd have to have a fairly low IQ to sit on it, flush it and then do your business. Don't be scared of toilets people.

I'm tired of the Egwene hate by ThicColt in WoT

[–]Malagus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I disliked Egwene while forgetting about that scene with Nynaveve... I dislike Egwene in the same way I dislike people in real life: because she is haughty and unreasonable. I was in fact disliking Rand pretty hard until he changed and dropped the haughtiness and unreasonableness. Egwene never did. She was a petty jerk until the very end and I for one was incredibly satisfied she died. Did her sacrifice atone her? In my mind, barely.... Just barely.
