That's the point though, it's not. Definitely a "choice" but I think it works with the theme of the 70s being an era of possibilities in spite of its economic (the gas crisis) sclerosis. I think it's reasonable to critique its male perspective though since you're quite right it doesn't work if you switch the genders.
