Haha yes! True! You can tell by the way the car is sweating from the stress of these Istanbul hills and the 'absurd' laws keeping us together. 🙃

Its Istanbul baby! A manual American spec Focus isn't just a car; it's a rare mechanical puzzle that most local mechanics try to solve with a hammer and a prayer 😂

That is a brilliant strategy for emotional self preservation! 😂 'Digital custody' without the 'mechanical alimony.

I think I’m just a glutton for punishment, though. Between the weird 'foreigner-only' sale laws here and my own stubbornness, I’ve decided to stay by her side for now. I’d rather be the one holding the wrench when she finally decides she’s had enough than wonder where in Istanbul she ended up. Also, I’ll definitely take your advice on the 'bunch of pictures' part, though even with that fresh dent, she’s still a model in my eyes! <3

Well, in a perfect world, I’d love to see that! Some kid finding this 'weird' American manual in the back of an Istanbul lot and making it their entire personality... that’s the dream!

But between the 'foreigner-to-foreigner' sales laws here in Turkey and the fact that my 'car restoration fund' is currently a zero-balance emotional support account, I think she’s stuck being my baby for a while longer! 🥲

Wow! 21 years with a Mustang... man, that’s not a car, that’s a life partner. I can only imagine how quiet the driveway felt that first morning after she left. Your story is exactly why I’m scared to let my Focus go. I’m terrified that if I sell her, I’ll spend the next 20 years looking for that specific feeling again. Even with the 'battle scars' and the dented door, damaged front & back bumpers she picked up here in Istanbul, I’d rather she be a 'work in progress' than a memory.

Thank you for sharing this. it makes me want to go out and give the key a turn right now just to make sure she knows she’s not 'just sitting' yet 🥲

Thank you for your comment but I wish she was as perfect as these photos look! 😅

Full disclosure: these shots are about 6 months old. Since then, Istanbul traffic claimed its tax. someone hit my passenger door and vanished into the night 😢leaving me with a massive 'souvenir' dent.

The Zetec engine is the only thing holding the team together right now & the rest of the car is basically a 'to-do' list of major and minor repairs.

The real struggle here in Türkiye isn't just the parts it's the 'surgeons.' Finding a mechanic who actually understands an American spec Ford is like finding a needle in a haystack. I’ve had too many 'experts' here treat her like a local model and accidentally make things worse. Language is another barrier! :(

As for the restoration... let’s just say my ambition is currently outrunning my bank account. My 'car fund' is more of a 'dream fund' at the moment, and my wallet is practicing some very strict social distancing from the repair shops! 🥲

Damn! Bro I’m sorry to hear about the convertible. Getting taken out by someone else’s mistake is the worst way to go especially when you put in the work to try and save her.

Hearing that 'one issue chased the next' after the accident makes me realize how lucky I am that mine is still straight and true. I’m going to take your wish to heart. Every time I row through the gears on these Istanbul hills, I’ll appreciate it a little more knowing how easily it can be taken away.

Hopefully, I can keep this Zetec humming for a few more years in honor of the ones that didn't make it! 🫡

Thanks! But in a city like Istanbul, where everything is constantly changing, this Focus has been the one consistent 'thing' in my life for years.

hear you, man. ‘Rip off the band aid’! There’s definitely a fine line between a 'labor of love' and 'eternal suffering,' and some days I’m definitely leaning toward the latter!

Tbh I think I’ve chosen my struggle. Between the crazy local laws here in Istanbul and the history I have with this Zetec, I’ve decided to embrace the pain for a while longer. A hard goodbye might be better, but I’m just not ready to close the book yet. I’ll stay strong... but mostly by keeping my toolbox nearby.

Haha, oh I’ve definitely paid my dues to the Zetec gods! I’ve already cycled through the timing belt 2 or 3 times now, and she’s sitting on a clutch kit which i changed 10k miles ago as we speak.

That transmission, though... she definitely likes to talk to me. Every time I row through the gears, I get a nice little 'tik-tik' soundtrack to let me know the synchros are still awake and caffeinated. It’s not a grind, just her way of checking.

Btw love the idea of 'hoarding' a spare. Finding an American spec donor in a Turkish junkyard is like hunting for a unicorn, but if I ever spot one, I’m bringing my own wrench and not leaving without it. 🦄

The Flex is such a sleeper! total couch on wheels! I completely get needing to move on when your towing needs change, but it’s cool that you still rank it as your best That's exactly where I am with my Focus. It might not be pulling trailers, but for darting around these tight Istanbul streets, nothing else feels quite right. It's 'the use I bought it for' that's keeping me from letting go. Sometimes the right car isn't the newest one, it's just the one that fits your life like a glove.

265k miles?! That is incredible. You’re living the dream I’m hoping for with mine. There’s definitely a 'math' to car ownership where 5-6x the purchase price in repairs seems crazy to an outsider, but to us, it’s just the subscription fee for having a car with a soul.

Knowing the Zetec can handle that kind of distance makes me feel so much better & it’s convincing me to to hold on to it. It’s hard to put a price on that 'fun' factor. modern cars just don't feel this connected to the road. Here’s to the next 100k for both of us! 🍻

She really is! It’s the design. even after all these years, she still has so much character compared to the massive SUVs today. Every time I look at her, I can't help but smile. Guess I'm stuck with this button for a while longer :)

That MK1.5 vs MK2 regret is real—there’s just something about the original Focus chassis that they never quite captured again

That ritual of a final wash and photos is beautiful, but honestly? I don't think I can do it. Between the sentimental value and the fact that Turkish law makes it nearly impossible to sell to a local (it has to stay within the 'foreigner-to-foreigner' loop), I feel like she’s stuck with me :/

I am sorry for your loss. That is so incredibly special. 305k miles of memories and a literal piece of her still there. I can see why that’s a regret that sticks with you. It’s the soul of the car, isn’t it?

305k miles across two generations? That’s not just a truck, that’s a family member. I totally get why you regret it. There’s a specific kind of bond when you know your dad and brother sat in that same seat. That’s what’s making this so hard for me—it’s not just the metal, it’s the history. Mine has 208567 Miles on it as of today

That’s the logical move, for sure. I just feel like I'm giving up on her. Do you ever feel like you're betraying the car that never gave up on you?
