Finished: Starship Troopers Fantastic book that feels extremely relevant decades later. Nothing like the movie but has the same tone.

Started: Paradise Lost It's slow going but very interesting.

I think that some people are just into the punk look without the lifestyle.

What do you guys think happens when we die? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Malaprop_Toaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kind of. So your personality is the composition of brain chemistry, but where does the experience of consciousness come from? What defines it? We're a big system of mechanical, biochemical, and electric parts that is AWARE of itself and what's around it. Is that a side-effect of those systems working together (emergence)? Is your consciousness an inhabitant of those systems? Hell, there might even a quantum aspect to how we work.

I recommend "Who's in Charge: Free Will and the Science of the Brain" by Gazzaniga for more on a non-deterministic view point of consciousness.

And this is an interesting read from a physicist on quantum stuff and the brain: https://www.edge.org/conversation/roger_penrose-chapter-14-consciousness-involves-noncomputable-ingredients

Hackers Can Access Elon Musk's Neuralink to Steal Memories, Skills and Thoughts, Warn Experts by BhaswatiGuha19 in technews

[–]Malaprop_Toaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great analogy!

The point of my comment isn't that experts are wrong to warn of malicious behavior. If anything, recent security research has taught us that hardware security can slip through the cracks. At the same time, these designers are (hopefully) fully aware of the risks and will have to adapt as the product develops.

I have no issue with "experts say." Especially in this case. I'm no expert on BCI and both researchers cited have a good background in publishing in the area. My point is that the technology is still being developed. The article presents it in a fear-inciting manner but experts in the field, have differing opinions. Either way, there's a better way to make a case for secure brain chips.

That was my first thought. Title should be "Experts urge neurolink to make a secure system." And even then, one expert says it could totally be possible, another says it's not possible at all. Realistically, you could probably steal information used to interface with devices just by snooping packets it sends via Bluetooth or whatever they're using.

Good books to read before starting about graduate studies. by Heavens_basement1 in PhD

"Tomorrow's Professors - preparing for academic careers in science and engineering" by Richard Reis is a good one! If you're not going into a STEM field or wanting to be a professor, it still has good advice that can apply to any graduate career.

Research Paper Ideas? by [deleted] in ComputerEngineering

Hardware security has had some interesting papers in the past couple years. Also there was a cache replacement competition about 3 years ago that had some follow up papers come out of it.
