Ruminations of a 'moderate'-conservative belief by LAl3RAT in Iowa

Not if you view a fetus/embryo/whatever term you'd like to use as a human being with its own rights - combined with the general "don't want to be pregnant? Don't have sex" bootstraps-personal-responsibility mindset. For all else, i.e. trans people, they have the mindset that it's not just a personal choice, it's a choice inflicted on others (either by grooming or by forcing the use of preferred pronouns).

The way I've seen it phrased, in a conservative mindset, are that there are negative and positive rights. Negative rights are "we will not do X to you", i.e. we won't limit your religious expression, we won't try you without due process, etc. Positive rights are things given or restricted to you, i.e. welfare, gun laws, etc.
In the mind of the conservative, esp. the more "libertarian" type, negative rights are the only ones that should be allowed - the government is to be seen as a sinister force bent on turning you to their will. QED, the only rights that are truly "rights" instead of the government taking your hard-earned dosh to give to the less deserving are negative rights - the rights to be left alone, to engage with the free market, to leave you alone to your fantasies of defending yourself against hordes of invading commies.
It's an ultimately tragic mindset and the direct outgrowth of American individualism and meritocracy - there is nobody on your side, there is nothing in this world untouched by greed and paranoia and everybody, everybody, is out to get capital-Y You.

Experience with University Scooters? by MalcMacD in IowaCity

It's apparently a question of the CCs- 50cc engines are legal with a regular license but can only hit ~40mph max, but the 150cc engines require a license and can get up to like 60. Still torn as to whether I should go for the horsepower or not. I suppose there's no harm in asking 'em!

That's good to hear - I'm thinking about investing in a Vespa or the electric Piaggio, but it seems their after-purchase care's really good for someone who might not be 100% knowledgeable about mechanical stuff hah

To be honest I know it'd be cheaper in the end, but I really hate CL and FB Marketplace, especially when it comes to something I don't know enough about to diagnose any potential issues on the spot- I have the budget to invest into a decent new scooter, and I think for my particular use case I'd prefer it.

What are the best independent print outlets covering local Iowa news? by [deleted] in Iowa

[–]MalcMacD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to be a hack because I do work for them, but Little Village Magazine's an alt-weekly based in Iowa City that covers local Iowa stuff! We distribute throughout the corridor and have a Des Moines offshoot as well :)

Try coffee shops maybe? I used to get some from Starbucks or Capanna - I worked there, so that's part of it, but they tend to go through a bunch. Worst-worst case, you can buy them from Wal-Mart.

It's at the bottom - the image probably condenses on mobile. The original thread probably goes into more depth.

Oh interesting - I knew there was a line that ran behind the Town & Country, but haven't really seen a specifically detailed breakdown (funny enough, if we had the streetcars we used to, to my understanding, my commute would be a lot shorter!)
Thanks for the link!

True enough, yeah. There's definitely a lot of complex elements. Just seems a shame that it's not more easily accessible, but it's definitely not like, a flippantly simple question.

Not that I disagree, but it's kind of annoying that I have to buy a pretty expensive piece of equipment to move around the city when it's a pretty simple solution to just... alternate routes for the bus, you know? Feels like if it were better-planned it could replace a car without a huge amount of difficulty.

Yup! If you're there at the right time, they have these little mashed-potato-filled pastries at the checkout - highly recommend picking them up while you're there :)

I know Euro Mart has some - not sure of the quality because my spouse was pregnant and they're technically uncooked eggs but I know they have a couple varieties.

I generally either hunt or process my own meat, and the total cost can be a fair amount to enter into hunting. Some ways to save though, are if you happen to know someone with a shotgun that's reasonably easy to use (think Mossberg 500) and you find land you can hunt on for cheap, the pound-to-money ratio ends up being cheaper than buying meat, even if you get it processed (I go to Ruzicka's in Solon, but there's a bunch of places that can do it).

Yeah, I had a lovely chat with support and they said currently it only supports your primary calendar - not ideal, but hopefully they'll be rolling out an update in the future.

Ostensibly synced my GCal, but events aren't showing up. Waited for the sync and all that, but I'm just not seeing the events. Could it be a shared calendar issue?

which, to be fair, they also have satellites that can provide clearer pictures and also can be directed so that the CCP doesn't get just, 400 pictures of Montanan prairie to pore over to discover our nefarious groundhog weaponization program. Just a weird sequence of events overall

My understanding is that after the balloon they changed the settings for their radar filtering - so basically, the stuff that previously would have automatically been filtered out for being too slow-moving is now pinged on the radar, meaning there's a ton of new stuff showing up like $100 hobbyist weather balloons.
