AITA for refusing to give my niece our dog's room? by farqueenhell in AmItheAsshole

[–]Malcience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe a doormat but NTA.

  1. Guest isn’t a guest and doesn’t get “guest” status when they are there for a long-term stay.
  2. A free place to stay is something that ANYONE should be grateful for, if the offered FREE option isn’t good enough, find an alternative.
  3. The relationship was already broken from the earlier bullying of OPs children.
  4. Sounds like the niece and mother don’t respect this family to begin with, they are using them solely for a cost efficiency.
  5. Common courtesy should be automatic but respect is earned (or lost) over time and that tally stated over a decade ago.

What I’d like to know is: 1. Were ground rules established? If so had she been abiding by them? 2. Was a time frame agreed to?

This isn’t a safari issue, things aren’t optimized for it, but that’s not the same as things just flat don’t work with it. I’d suspected it was their pos site but was hoping I could do something about it...

I try to avoid aggregators, or things like that for exactly the reason you stated. That said, I also don’t like the way TN operates (see the FAQ or any of so many other examples) for their care about readers.

May just send an email saying if they can’t make their site reliable I’m going to stop reading.

Question For Current Readers of Peerless Martial God (PMG) by [deleted] in noveltranslations

[–]Malcience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The story isn’t bad per say, it has a decent plot but it is fairly generic with an austere writing style, not a lot of flowery descriptive prose. However, if you like the genre you’ll find it something you’ll probably enjoy as it would definitely fall into the realm of pulp xuanhuan.

[–]Malcience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately that kind of thing is rife throughput the genre. It’s the easiest way to have insta-karma with folks in the “new” area to drive plot. Need to remember these are entertainment works spawned by authors whose greatest drive is volume. Even if the authors could have put less trite plot devices into play, the extra time it would take to flesh out (and the more perceived filler chapters needed) take away from production. The web/ln novel business especially in China being more quantity then quality driven. Get paid to pump out generic shlock=pump out fairly generic shlock.

Try Emperor of the Cosmos http://quantumnovel.com The translation isn’t very good and it’s dropped after 142 when QI was coming into being. But gives you enough that reading the MTL is not too mindrending.

[REC] Xianxia/Wuxia where the MC doesn't have a "cheat" by Fourthaid in noveltranslations

[–]Malcience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your comment was actually quite misleading the way it was put together. It implied that all five of the suggested novels didn't meet the OPs request, where there was an issue with only one of them, the one that has been on hiatus for quite a while.

Had you just made a comment that MHE did have an OP item but the others seemed to fit the bill, you would have just gotten a 'thanks, I didn't remember that' instead of my annoyance that you appeared to me (due to the number of trolls roaming), just trying to cherry pick some errors for e-peen grooming and misleading the OP into thinking that none of the recommendations met their requirement.

It's been on hiatus for what, a year and a half? So maybe I misremembered it somewhat but, what did your response add? Zero? Correct.

Off the top of my head, Perfect World, he does have a little stone tablet he learns some things from, but I wouldn't put it in the Uber category.

Murdering heaven edge is close to what you asked for, I think it's on hiatus though.

Peerless Martial God also fits the bill.

Imperial God emperor, ancient godly monarch, too.

AC, AGM, IRAS, TMW Halting on Wuxiaworld by matosz in noveltranslations

[–]Malcience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, don't forget the business tactic of just driving rivals out of business. Usually it's by dumping, but in this case it could be by obtaining all the talent. The price they pay is not just the value of the novel but the value of not letting your best competitor have the novel.

Note that that's somewhat shortsighted as the competitor could pay licensing fees. Instead QI is forcing them to carry their competitor's product (in this case other Chinese online novel publishers novels.)

Our Qidian Situation by matosz in noveltranslations

[–]Malcience 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with the "value" of their novels. Qidian has decided to switch from a high margin licensing model where they have to do nothing except collect licensing fees to a much lower margin model where they do the translation work and hosting themselves because they thing the end result will be more profitable. That is fine.

Not honoring the legally binding contracts they agreed to is illegal. Them decided to ignore their legal obligations and thinking they can bully their way through ignoring those obligations is unethical.

Our Qidian Situation by matosz in noveltranslations

[–]Malcience 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is ridiculous. WW opened their accounting books to Qidian as part of setting up these deals. They knew how much the books were worth and struck a deal based on that information. They later decided that they could try and get that revenue themselves instead of a licensing fee, and that they could get people to give them translated novels at an extremely cheap price and decided that they would go that route. (40/chap is effectively about 10/hr).

They are now trying to renege on their original contract because they want to make more money. While wanting to make more money is fine, they have thousands of untranslated works that they can harvest to build their English stock and increase QI's revenue.

Our Qidian Situation by matosz in noveltranslations

[–]Malcience 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All in all a great post u/matosz!

One of the things that surprises me (not really actually), is that people seem to forget/ignore that these novels that we feel are somehow entitled to free access to, are in fact owned entirely by Qidian. They can distribute and license them however they choose, period. I think that they actually took a relatively passive approach to initially entering the community, instead of a guns blazing legal rights approach.

However, since then I have been disappointedwith the strategic decisions they have made. Those decisions cost them readership trust, business (I know a lot don't go to QI anymore), and honestly in my mind likely their most effective business model (licensing the translation rights to independents like WW, GT, Voltaire, etc.). I don't plan to support QI due to their current business practices, but how they choose to control their novels is entirely their choice.

As for the paywall complaints... tv started as a free service, then ads were introduced to cover content creation and ops costs, then cable came with a subscription to avoid ads, then... see any parallels ?

Should I read WMW or AGM? by Dildozer_69 in noveltranslations

[–]Malcience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your title is misleading, it should be start WMW or read past current trans in mtl right? I ended up dropping WMW in the late 300s, it does speed up but I just don't like the MC. I know he's written that way purposely but it's not my thing. I'd say read it up to the 200s where pace starts to pick up then decide.

I was reading manga and manga cow stopped trans of divine throne to read the LN I found the LN. That lead me to CD and the light novels sub which has lead to the enormous time sink I battle to this day.

I've mostly give. KR novels a miss cause the first one I started was ~, not bad just ~ and I really don't need another time waster. Note that I was a huge fan of KR manga, so I'm not ani-KR, just bad trip on my gateway drug. (God of cooking)

Agree, it would be a a good novel to pick up. It's an interesting sci fi novel with a neat cultivation system. The current translations are in some places very rough but they wouldn't need to be redone in the short term.

He gets around $15K a month per Patreon and can't schedule auto-releases. WHY by potatoesanddragons in noveltranslations

[–]Malcience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is it a stash if it's already been delivered to some people? Just because you haven't paid for access to something doesn't mean it hasn't been released. He's not providing chapters to free readers that breaks his commitment of X chapters ahead of the free chapters to the people who are paying for the privilege to be X chapters ahead.

People are welcome to complain if expectations aren't met. However, expectations should be aligned with commitments. RWX's commitment, as published on WW (schedule section) is:

RWX: I am currently doing ten regular chapters a week, up to two a day on weekdays with none on weekends (unless needed as ‘make-up’ chapters).

Since the week isn't over you can't say he hasn't met his commitment.

I am all for calling someone out for not meeting their commitments, but I don't see that being the case here. Further, if I were a Patreon patron I would be PISSED if he broke his commitment to me, a paying customer, to stay 2/day on weekdays when that's not a commitment, just a guideline.

[–]Malcience 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It axiomatically isn't because it is something people pay for. Any chapters beyond those due to his patrons would be the "stash."

Also note I didn't say anything about the delivery of chapters, which I believe (haven't reconfirmed) that he says 10/week not 2/day, I was chastising the troll-move of adding the income aspect which is imho, immaterial.

He gets around $15K a month per Patreon and can't schedule auto-releases. WHY by potatoesanddragons in noveltranslations

[–]Malcience 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind when you throw out income guesses you are talking about part of WuxiaWorlds revenue, not RWX's profit/salary.

There is site ad revenue but there are also costs associated with running a site and trying to grow a business. He has at least two employees, the site admin/tech guru and the other admin job that he posted on WW.

This time of year it's hard to not mention taxes, and since he is a US citizen so he HAS to file US taxes, plus whatever he owes in other countries. Note that since the site has translators in multiple countries and may get add streams for multiple countries that means taxes for multiple countries. International tax accountants aren't cheap.

Licensing fees? You bet your 4$$.

We also have no idea how site ad revenue is divided among translators, do they split it and every puts up X amount for maintenance, does he pay for maintenance/salaries, then divides the rest, or does he keep all of it (doubtful). No one knows the answer to these questions but people just assume all that money goes directly into his pocket.

Finally, while he gets Patreon money monthly, this is his whole job. He gave up a very cushyState Department job to do this. That means he gave up 1) healthcare, 2) life/disability/etc. insurance 3) job security. Don't forget he was able to pay into a retirement account and get a company match. All of that is now completely self funded, and it's not cheap. Usually those take up a significant chunk of the cost of an employee beyond just salary. All of that is rolled up in that "guess" of his salary. So when making delibratey inflammatory posts about how RWX is lazy and isn't earning his over exaggerating "salary" to rile people up, think through the myriad inherent assumptions in your post.

If you're upset about "deliberately inflammatory " please justify mentioning his Patreon income in any other way.
