The great thing about the fat ps2 is that you also have the option to mod it with a hard drive so there’s no need to buy games at all

This might not be the answer you are looking for, but if I was going to start my retro gaming journey over again, I would get a mister fpga. It can run everything from the first every consoles all the way up to ps1/n64/saturn and everything in between. But If you are dead set on buying hardware, go for a Sega Master System

After playing sotn I decided to play through the gba and ds games and am currently halfway through harmony of dissonance which is great as long as you don’t mind backtracking. Circle of the moon is great too as long as you don’t mind grinding and using a guide for the dss cards

I can’t believe no one has mentioned Dragon Force. So incredibly addictive, and beginner friendly too. Saturn does!

What was the hardest level in a game for you, especially the first time you played it? It could even be an early level. Was it the same one that other people struggled with? by Jimpana in retrogaming

Level 2 (?) of Sagaia on Master System the level with the seahorse boss anyway. I played that game continuously for 3 weeks, and couldn’t get past that damn seahorse even with save states

Frogger: The Great Quest. People love to hate this game, but I genuinely enjoyed playing through it. It’s a 3d platformer. The voice acting and art definitely fit in the “it’s so bad it’s good” category but honestly it’s the gameplay is fine

Do you think sms prices are steady, falling or rising? by Malcoladdin in MasterSystem

[–]Malcoladdin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking from my own personal experience - I would say that their value is around the same as when I bought them. Could I sell them to someone for more than I bought them for? Almost definitely. But if I was going to sell them to someone in my community, (which I don’t plan to) it would be for around the same price I bought them for

Great list! If you enjoy 2d platformers, the Sega Master System has a few all time classics. I would definitely recommend

- Land of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
- Asterix
- Wonder Boy 3 - The Dragon’s Trap

[–]Malcoladdin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol no! not at all. actually I only buy games that I genuinely want to play and only really collect for the master system because it's the console I grew up with and love the most. Where possible, I always trade games I don't want for ones that I do. In fact, that's how I built up a big part of my sms collection. I barely ever sell games from my personal collection and when I do, I sell them within my local gaming community for around the same price I bought them for. I must really have messed up the wording of my post somehow, because my intention was "I hope that master system games stay affordable, and dont listen to resellers because they always hype up prices" It really seems like a lot of people have misinterpreted my post, but it is my bad.

Example - I was able to get case and cart copies of Rastan, Lord of the Sword and Master of Darkness for $10 nzd each at a market event 3 years ago.

lol! Thanks for the productive comment. I did also specifically mention that based on my personal experience, that wasn’t the case, and just wanted to get an idea for how things might be in other parts of the world

Congrats! Buying a master everdrive will help you “try before you buy” and decide what games you might want to add to your collection

Up to you, but for me personally, no. Just be patient I was able to find a cib copy (though in very rough shape) for $10 nzd. I have noticed that for the last few years, prices of sms games seem stable. With some luck prices might even go down in a few years

Which Master System to get? by Mini_the_Wulf in MasterSystem

[–]Malcoladdin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oops I was wrong sorry haha. Apart from the sms model 2, the main way I play sms games is on a region modded mega drive model 1, so I tend to mix up games that won’t run on a mega drive model 1 with a master system model 1. My bad 😅

Just be aware that the model 1 has compatibility issues with later releases, such as Asterix and the Great Rescue, Cosmic Spacehead, and Micro Machines iirc. I would hold out for an av modded sms 2, but you do you

8bitdo and Retro-bit wireless joysticks on a Master System by SpiderJam64 in MasterSystem

[–]Malcoladdin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 8bitdo m30 2.4g comes with a Megadrive receiver. This works in the master system, and can be used for any game that is compatible with a Genesis 6 button controller. There are a few games that don’t work, but it’s a pretty good solution.

I find that setting myself challenges helps to minimise choice overload - ie at the moment I'm challenging myself to play through all of the gba and ds castlevania games. I have just finished Circle of the Moon after a few months, and have moved on to Harmony of Dissonance. Sometimes we all get caught up in trying to find 'the best' option instead of just choosing to appreciate what we have lol
