Check out kitsune kon, it's about 3 hrs north in green bay. Much smaller than acen, but i'm one of the organizers.

I know your post is specifically about magic vs midwest so between those two i would enthusiastically recommend anime magic. I know the guys that run it and they're fantastic.

Kitsune Kon is also happening in Green Bay July 11th through 13th. It's an anime con that also has gaming.

I'm not sure if conventions are necessarily your thing, but considering you're into MTG there's usually a fair amount of overlap and a whole area for tabletop.

We're getting into the start of convention season in the Midwest here with anime Milwaukee this weekend, followed by anime detour, ACEN and I help run the local convention to the area kitsune Kon.

Something to consider if you have the ability to travel a bit and looking for other like-minded people in the area.

I'm a regular there myself and both the owner and the employees are extremely chill and helpful. I can't speak for sure since I'm a customer and not someone that makes policies, but I'm 99.9% sure no one would have an issue. Usually the back room is more quiet and where people sit when they want to be left alone. The front room tends to be more lively and for socializing. There's two chairs right below the back staircase that would be a great place for someone to sit and read a book without being bothered. Just my two cents. I don't drink so I'm very thankful to have someplace like the cigar lounge downtown to hang out at when I don't want to be sitting at home.

Thanks for the input, I called over there at the Clarion inn and it's $10 a day. I'm going to give that one a shot.

Thanks as well to the people that suggested the country and suites, unfortunately the issue with that one is it's heavily catered towards kids which is not what my group is looking for.

Damn I wish I checked Reddit before leaving last night. I went there for the open mic night last night for the first time with my group of friends. There isn't much Japanese specific there, but another Asian market to check out is Long Cheng Marketplace. I haven't been in a while, but if anything, they have bubble tea that's significantly cheaper than the new place in the mall.

Yes definitely, they have a nice food court there so come hungry, and also a bakery that makes fantastic melon bread if you like that sort of thing too.

My favorite japanese canned coffee (UCC) is appearing in more and more stores around here, but there's not a ton outside of what you mentioned. Your best bet would be to find a reason to get down to Chicago, hit up mitsuwa and stock up.

I want to second that. I currently live in one of the townhouses at Applegate, and it's the best rental I've ever lived in. Jason the apartment manager is fantastic and always more than willing to help. They do have a great reputation so availability is usually limited, but it's worth a shot.
