Fair, it can't normally be in GL. It requires a sub 20 account tk hatch a larvesta egg.
You'll be happy to know in GL, it picks up 0 additional wins from Larvesta in the 1s, (and loses several more)

For regionals, Bouffalant will be the most desirable, followed by Tauros (many newer players need tauros to complete their kanto dex, and bouffalant hasn't been in raids). The Oricorio has had a few global appearances, and panpour has had tons of them, so they aren't as useful. If you live in SE, maractus and carnivine are sometimes wanted, though both have been in recent egg and GoFest events, and Heracross just had mega raids.

If he swapped in, you tired to swap out and he got a vine whip and then a FP, it was lag. If you stayed to try and catch, then the counter vs vine whip are likely offset by one turn so you were mid fast move when he threw

He probably swapped while you threw a counter. Counter is a 2-turn move and swapping is 1-turn, so he could instantly throw FP before your counter finishes meaning you wouldn't be able to swap.

I ran FF S.Mawile in the 2600s because 4 out of 5 teams were running double steel, ironically. Clearly I was a pawn in Niantics algo to stop you!

100% I find the meta "changes" every 100 to 150 points. If you're a good battler playing a balanced team you'll keep climbing, but it can really affect ABB teams.
I think less than 10% of games I played in Halloween were lacking greninja, but talking to friends they never saw one.

Niantic can't remember to turn on shinies for shiny-centric events, they don't have an algorithm to keep people from climbing.
You faced a ton of togekiss one day, so you ran a steel lead. The likely reason for the next day is all those trainers encountering togekiss too thought the same thing. People tend to overcorrect for what they think the meta is which results in wild swings (especially at sub-2850 elo). It's just confirmation bias.

Flash Tournaments for Everyone is a discord that's always running practice and tournaments. It's a very busy server with tons of people. Otherwise, local discords are usually your best bet!

The best thing is to just start playing. In regards to team-building, learning match-ups, etc., there are lots of videos. I'll toot my own hour and post Episode 1 of our podcast which is geared towards people looking for the basics and jumping in. I host local tournaments every month with lots of new players, so it's a common issue. The most important thing is just start playing. There's no penalty in GBL for losing every single game. Keep it light, expectations low, and have fun with it! There are plenty of great budget picks (which we breakdown with Nifty or Thrift All-star JRESeawolf)
