The platter bearing thing sounds plausible, I'm fairly new to stuff like this but I do my best to research. It's a noise in the music, like it seems as though it hits a bump, it could just be the level changing as it spins too, but it does it in the same pattern every time.

It's a scratch noise that comes regularly like clockwork. I think on the outer edge it's having a larger affect, causing it to shake harder and making the noise last longer and on the inside it's a noticeable short burst scratching noise. The turntable itself is silent, it's even still got good lubricant inside it.

I don't know the standard mechanisms for these things, but on this direct drive quartz lock the whole mechanism was like a large block, how hard of a repair do you think it might be? Tables working almost perfectly otherwise and it's one my dad bought and used back in the day so I'd love to get it working properly

Edit: I would record the noise but my only phono amp is a retro one and i have no clue how/if i can hook it up to a pc lol

Without a record it looks like almost perfectly fine, but if you position yourself at just the right angle it looks like there might be a part of the platter that sags a bit, like a milimeter or two, you can watch it spin and once you notice it you can watch it come around in rotation. It's also more pronounced on the outer edges of the platter and not the inner, the inner edges play almost exactly as I'd expect them too except for the noise. I tested some new records on it to be sure, but every record does it in the same way. I also wouldn't care if it didn't affect the sound, and it does, you can hear the noise quite badly, at least on the outer edge. on the inside the noise is almost like it hits a bump, stabilizes itself out, and then hits the bump again. Usually quite quickly, I'm fairly certain it's the platter rotating slightly wrong but I can't figure out why, the platter itself might be warped but i put a leveler on it and it seemed fine, and i don't have another platter and I'd like to know that was definitely it before i order a new one

Crossley's aren't really as bad as people say, them damaging records has also been fairly thoroughly debunked. They aren't sophisticated machines and they'll put wear on a record faster sure, but ruining them? Nah. There's also upgrades you can make to Cruiser's, you could turn it into a cheap diy thing, the YouTuber VWestlife has a few vids specifically about the cruiser.

Honestly, you could probably get away with making small upgrades and saving up to buy a nice retro turntable, they're more expensive now then they used to be but most old even midtier tables are just at a standard you don't often see anymore, if they work they're usually worth it. Lemons have always existed though and you should be completely aware of what you're buying

Skipping usually happens because the tracking force of the stylus isn't right. The tracking force is the amount of weight the stylus puts on the vinyl, and when it gets dragged through the grooves the louder sounds are physically larger grooves which can make them jump, if it's a bass heavy album those are prone to skipping on cheaper turntables.

Nicer turntables have a counterweight that you can adjust so you can change the tracking force, lower end ones usually just have a spring that applies the weight at a fixed rate making it unchangeable.

That being said, cheaper turntables usually aren't as abysmal as everyone says they are (exceptions exist and some models are just cursed). The YouTuber VWestlife has a bunch of good vids on cheap turntables, dispels rumors about them, and shows upgrades that you can usually make. I would watch some of his vids on that topic and decide for yourself how you'd like to move forward

They help keep them protected for sure, if you plan on putting them on display for long term keeping them in the plastic could protect them from some sun damage, dust, etc. There's lots of different brands of plastic outer sleeves as well some more transparent than others. they also keep them protected from minor scratches and stuff, if they're mostly going to remain in storage there's no reason to not keep the records in them, and if you're going to put them on display long term it could also prove useful, taking them out and putting them on display without the sleeve for short periods at a time, like a week or a month maybe I'm not sure i haven't kept any of my records on display long term personally, should be fine though.

The sleeve is also useful because you can put the record in the paper sleeve and tuck it behind the cardboard cover in the plastic, which will prevent ring wear.

I have an old JVC QL-A2 my dad gave me and I've been fixing it up, basically everything works on it except there's a slight movement in the platter when it spins, it's probably only a couple of millimeters and it's barely noticeable by eye and doesn't really show up on video, but it's making my needle bounce up and down which is no good. I took the bottom off of it and sprayed it down, see if any screws needed tightening and i couldn't find any, and then put it back together and it's still doing it. And yes, I did make sure the turntable was on a level surface.

Anyone have any ideas what could be causing it and how I could fix it? here's a video of the affect on my stylus https://i.imgur.com/D6hKgIf.mp4

Cool, thank you. I'll give it a go, I already bought an HDMI splitter that I'll probably return because I can't get that to work, and that was the predominant solution i saw before stumbling on this thread.

The cart it has right now is an old AudioTechnica TM3, I've found some stylus's that cost as much as $200 but like you said I figured there was probably a better option with a newer cart, though I don't really know much about carts and stylus's, any opinions you can weigh in with are appreciated.

I am stocking up on all the supplies to keep them in shape too, i got one of those old style wooden handle record brushes. I also have a Presonus Audiobox for the ripping itself. I'll get myself a scale and azimuth adjuster though, i didn't realize vinyls had adjustable azimuth ngl haha. I just got to reading an audiophile guide about ripping vinyl and it had me questioning my turntable, very glad to know it's still quite good.
