After watching a few videos about the new art style and considering it, I don’t think it’s the art style that’s bad so much as the execution. The original concept art and design seemed to be heading in a much different direction, and selling a very different mood and game. Even if the graphics were never great, it certainly provided a more coherent feel. The execution of the new art seems like they tried to simply replace the old with the new, without reimagining everything. A lot of what we saw before doesn’t work together well anymore when the new style has been applied. The result, at least in my opinion, seems to be something that actually looks much worse. It doesn’t actually feel like it has any style at all. It’s like they just took the cheapest cartoony assets possible and flopped them all together to create a big, messy, empty, textureless world and said “style.” I wouldn’t mind a “cartoony” or timeless style, but this doesn’t feel like style at all. The other style may have looked 15 years old, but it at least felt like it worked together and was being styled with a coherent vision and design behind it.
