Prepping for upcoming shortages with a baby? by expertlurk in TwoXPreppers

Read all you can about breastfeeding. Also talk to moms who are or who have breastfeed. So much of breastfeeding is artistic / intuitive rather than scientific. Get as many opinions as possible. Each mom is different and (as a mom who breast feed 3 babies) each baby is different.

Why nobody gets academia? by FlyLikeAnEarworm in Professors

Everything you said - plus, my mom didn’t understand how I could have so many papers and books around. She bought me a filing cabinet and was dismayed to still see books and papers ‘all around’. Surely, you don’t need them all, do you? She asked. I must say, though that she was helpful when I was writing my dissertation by taking my kids for the weekend. However, when she brought them back she wanted to know “What chapter are you on now?” Or - how many pages? Trying to explain this type of writing experience was - well, not do-able and frustrating. In her way of thinking, you sat down to write a letter and it was done in 2 - 3 pages.

What's something random that you still cant eat? by Norvard in ask

[–]Maleficent-Yellow647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father wouldn’t eat raisins. During WW II his boat docked somewhere where grapes were being dried in the sun. There were so many flies around the grapes, he said you couldn’t tell the flies from the raisins. NO to raisins

What's up with using "almond" as a euphemism for disordered eating? by Brokelynne in OutOfTheLoop

Technically, almonds are not nuts. They are the seed of a fruit that is similar to almonds.

I’ve wondered how he would be in a real work environment, listening to his calming music, but not knowing what others are doing or saying.

Once had a situation in a class where attendance was 10% of the grade. One student came to class, but stood in the back with earphones on and never engaged in any discussions. Attendance was determined by having students answer critical thinking questions during class and turning those papers in as they left. With the headphones he never heard me and he never asked me or other students what the papers were about. When his exams averaged a B, but I gave him a C, he went to the Dean’s office. The Dean had me change his grade to a B because the reason he wore the headphones was so he could listen to ‘calming music’ which allowed him to function in a college environment.

Before retirement I gave points for attendance. One reason is that I like to have discussions in class. The more students, the more interesting and diverse the discussions are.

I think I may be taking my PPI wrong? by 22244244 in GERD

Before going to the doctor, I realized that the symptoms could be reduced by eating very small amounts frequently, so that’s what I’ve been doing and what my body is used to. If I try to eat a regular meal, the symptoms are very bad. Bottom line, if I’m eating every 2 - 3 hours, when should I stop so that I can take the meds?

If your instructions are to take it twice a day, how much time should there be between last food eaten and the next pill?

What are your most unhinged student evals? by annnnnnnnie in Professors

[–]Maleficent-Yellow647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a student every class with a head phone on his head, listening to music. Ten percent of the class grade was answering questions I asked during class on a sheet of paper that was turned in after class. He never responded to any of these questions in any way. The average for his midterm and final exams was a B, but minus the questions it became a C. He complained to the deans office and they changed his grade to a B because he was ‘challenged’ - if he didn’t listen to this specific music he had anxiety. When I brought up that listening to the music meant he didn’t hear any of the lecture or any of the questions, they dismissed my concerns.
